Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances (RTECS)
What is RTECS?
RTECS is a compendium of data extracted from the open scientific literature. The data are recorded in the format developed by the RTECS staff and arranged in alphabetical order by prime chemical name. Six types of toxicity data are included in the file: (1) primary irritation; (2) mutagenic effects; (3) reproductive effects; (4) tumorigenic effects; (5) acute toxicity; and (6) other multiple dose toxicity. Specific numeric toxicity values such as LD50, LC50, TDLo, and TCLo are noted as well as species studied and route of administration used. For each citation, the bibliographic source is listed thereby enabling the user to access the actual studies cited. No attempt has been made to evaluate the studies cited in RTECS. The user has the responsibility of making such assessments. Page last updated: February 16, 2010

  • Presentation IFSTP publications Presentation IFSTP (International Federation of Societies of Toxicologic Pathologists) is a confederation of ten national and regional societies of toxicologic pathology ( STPs ) representing scientists from around the globe build integrate and set standards in toxicologic pathology. The IFSTP is not a society per se but more a coordination and initiation body. Its activities are controlled by the member STPs, which provide funds and volunteers to conduct IFSTP functions. The IFSTP is governed by an Executive Committee (EC) composed of one representative from each member STPs as well as several elected officers (chosen by the EC). These elected positions include the President, Secretary-General, and Treasurer. The IFSTP Presidency and Secretary-General offices rotate among the member STPs. For example, the next president is coming from the Society of Toxicologic Pathology (STP, of North America) while the current president is from the European STP and the immediate past president from the Japanese STP. The IFSTP has a relatively short history. I was established in 1989 by the STPs of France, Germany/Switzerland/Austria (now the European STP), Japan, North America, and United Kingdom.

Pfiesteria and Chattonella subsalsa aquatic health concerns in cold water climates.

Dangerous Aquatic Health issues at the beach, ocean, coastal bays and aquatic areas along back bays of Ocean City Maryland and Delaware and other coastal communities.
Public awareness of pfiesteria has resulted in bring to light numerous health issues that were previously unknown to occur in our coastal communities. Just as recently as September 29th, 2000 at the North Carolina University (HPLC ULTRA HIGH PRESSURE LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHY) facility a strain of the Chattonnella micro-organism was isolated and characterized as Chattonella veruculosa. This micro organism behaves similar to Pfiesteria micro toxin, causing fish kills, "red tides", and from empirical evidence being accumulated in Pokomoke Maryland, similar human health effects as pfiesteria. The area of Ocean City Maryland, the back bays of Assawoman Bay, the Bishopville Prong, Sinepuextent Bay, Indian River Bay, Little Indian River Bay, the Delaware River tributaries, and coastal Atlantic resemble many areas to our southern neighbors where the micro-toxin of Chattonnella subsalla exists. The strain of Chattonnella - veruculosa -, analysis just last September has the ability to survive in colder water temperatures.
A dinoflagellate, Chattonnella veruculosa, was documented to be in our inland bays and on the Atlantic coastline here in Delaware during the summer of 2000. This organism produces a biotoxin called a breve toxin which affects fish and mammals.

TETRATOX

TETRATOX
Tetrahymena pyriformis Tetrahymena pyriformis (strain GL-C). The 50% impairment growth concentration (IGC ) is the recorded endpoint. Briefly, cultures are reared in 50 ml of a semi-defined medium in 250 ml Erlenmeyer flasks. In the TETRATOX assay, a range-finding assay followed by three replicate definitive tests is performed on each test material. Definitive test replicates consist of a minimum of five different concentrations of each test material with duplicate flasks of each concentration. Thus, a minimum of 30 data points comprises each analysis. Duplicate controls, which have no test material but were inoculated with T. pyriformis , and a blank are used to provide a measure of the acceptability of the test by indicating the suitability of the medium and test conditions, and a basis for interpreting data from other treatments. While several different time points were used over the course of more than 15 years, each was used with a medium and test condition regime to allow for 8 to 9 cell cycles in controls. Duplicate flasks are inoculated with an initial density of 2,500 cells/ml with log-growth-phase ciliates. Following
