New Simplicity From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search New Simplicity (in German, die neue Einfachheit ) was a stylistic tendency amongst some of the younger generation of German composers in the late 1970s and early 1980s, reacting against not only the European avant garde of the 1950s and 1960s, but also against the broader tendency toward objectivity found from the beginning of the twentieth century. Alternative terms sometimes used for this movement are "inclusive composition", “new subjectivity” ( neue Subjektivität ), “new inwardness” ( Neue Innigkeit ), “New Romanticism”, “New Sensuality”, “New Expressivity”, “New Classicism”, and “New Tonality”. Contents Goals Other groups Reception Other New Simplicity composers ... edit Goals At the end of the 1970s, the German movement was first recognized by Aribert Reimann , who named seven composers, not previously associated as a group, who had each come to similar positions "in an entirely personal fashion" (Reimann 1979, 25). These seven composers were: Hans-Jürgen von Bose Hans-Christian von Dadelsen Detlev Müller-Siemens Wolfgang Rihm ... Ulrich Stranz , and Manfred Trojahn . In general, these composers strove for an immediacy between the creative impulse and the musical result (in contrast to the elaborate precompositional planning characteristic of the avant garde), with the intention also of communicating more readily with audiences. In some cases this meant a return to the tonal language of the 19th century as well as to the traditional forms (symphony, sonata) and instrumental combinations (string quartet, piano trio) which had been avoided for the most part by the avant garde. He also undertook private studies in composition from N�rg�rd and Gudmundsen-Holmgreen, among others. Abrahamsen was active for a period in the Gruppen for Alternativ Musik, a forum for musicians who wished to perform new music in alternative forms; the group also aimed to develop socially and politically committed music, and Abrahamsen was thus able to cultivate his interest in political issues expressed through music. (His first symphony was originally entitled Anti-EEC-Sats (�Anti-EEC Movement�); it became Symphony in C after the composer came to the realization that �music cannot be against�.) In 1982 Abrahamsen became a teacher of instrumentation at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. He has also been artistic director of the Esbjerg Ensemble since 1988. The composer�s first works adhered to the style of the Danish �new simplicity� movement of the mid-1960s. For Abrahamsen and other composers such as Gudmundsen-Holmgren, Christiansen and Ole Buck, this stylistic attitude, which marked a break with serial music, was a Danish response to the complexity emanating from central Europe, particularly the circle around the Darmstadt School. In Abrahamsen this aesthetic anchorage came to mean an almost naive simplicity in musical expression, as exemplified in his orchestral piece Skum (�Foam�, 1970). During the 1970s and 80s he developed an entirely personal style, in which a modernist stringency and economy are incorporated into an individual musical universe. The mature Abrahamsen emerged as early as in the first string quartet, �Ten Preludes� (1973), which combines an assured sense of structure with clarity of expression.
