John Quincy Adams
Famous quotations by John Quincy Adams:
  • Courage and perseverance have a magical talisman, before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish into air.
All men profess honesty as long as they can. To believe all men honest would be folly. To believe none so is something worse.
Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, and you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost.
Posterity: you will never know how much it has cost my generation to preserve your freedom. I hope you will make good use of it.

    John Adams
US President - 1797-1801 Courtesy of the Library of Congress Learned and thoughtful, John Adams was more remarkable as a political philosopher than as a politician. "People and nations are forged in the fires of adversity," he said, doubtless thinking of his own as well as the American experience. Adams was born in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1735. A Harvard-educated lawyer, he early became identified with the patriot cause; a delegate to the First and Second Continental Congresses, he led in the movement for independence. During the Revolutionary War he served in France and Holland in diplomatic roles, and helped negotiate the treaty of peace. From 1785 to 1788 he was minister to the Court of St. James's, returning to be elected Vice President under George Washington.

James Wierzbicki / writings John Adams "Nixon in China"
    "The Death of Klinghoffer"
"Nixon in China" HOUSTON I COULDN'T IMAGINE a story about Nixon in China as anything but heavy satire,'' composer John Adams said about his initial response to Peter Sellars' proposal. Until its recent world premiere at Houston's new Wortham Center opera house, almost everyone who had heard about ''Nixon in China'' reacted in much the same way. It was Sellars, the champion enfant terrible among today's theatrical directors, who first came up with the idea of basing an opera on former President Richard M. Nixon's visit to the People's Republic of China in February 1972. That was five years ago, a mere decade after the historic event had taken place. Chou En-lai and Mao Tse-tung had both died in 1976. Nixon and his wife, Pat, however, were still very much alive. So was Henry Kissinger, who as secretary of state laid the groundwork for the Nixon visit during a secret trip to China in 1971. Although the annals of opera contain little precedent for it, the idea of turning still-living persons into larger-than-life operatic characters was not what struck Adams as preposterous. What put him off was Sellars' vision of Nixon, Mao and the others as ''the mythological figures of our time.''

The Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798 are not exactly among the more proud works of the American government. The acts, which were actually four separate bills, were a direct reaction to the XYZ Affair. Three of the acts were designed to expire after two years, with the option of renewal. Which act DID NOT have an expiration date? John Adams: The Original Model

        The Naturalization Act
After leaving office in 1801, Adams retired from public life to his farm in Quincy. He did on occasion find himself again a part of the political machinery. He was even afforded the chance to cast an electoral ballot in a later presidential election. For whom did he cast his vote? John Adams: The Original Model

James Monroe . In 1820, Adams, now 86 years old, cast one of Massachusetts' 15 electoral votes for President Monroe, who had carried all 24 states in the Union at that time.

    John Adams
Birth and Education John Adams, by Charles Willson Peale, from life, c. 1791-1794. Used by permission of Independence National Historic Park.
John Adams was born at Quincy, then part of the ancient town of Braintree, on the 19th day of October, old style, 1735. He was a descendant of the Puritans, his ancestors having early emigrated from England, and settled in Massachusetts. Discovering early a strong love of reading and of knowledge, proper care was taken by his father to provide for his education. His youthful studies were prosecuted in Braintree, under Mr. Marsh, a gentleman whose fortune it was to instruct several children, who in manhood were destined to act a conspicuous part in the scenes of the revolution.
He became a member of Harvard College, 1751, and was graduated in course in 1755: with what degree of reputation he left the university is not now precisely known; we only know that he was distinguished in a class of which the Dr. Hemmenway was a member, who bore honorable testimony to the openness and decision of his character, and to the strength and activity of his mind.
Having chosen the law for his profession, he commenced and prosecuted its studies under the direction of Samuel Putnam, a barrister of eminence at Worcester. By him he was introduced to the celebrated Jeremy Gridley, then attorney general of the province of Massachusetts Bay. At the first interview they became friends; Gridley at once proposed Mr. Adams for admission to the bar of Suffolk, and took him into special favor. Soon after his admission, Mr. Gridley led his young friend into a private chamber with an air of secrecy, and, pointing to a book case, said, "Sir, there is the secret of my eminence, and of which you may avail yourself as you please." It was a pretty good collection of treatises of the civil law. In this place Mr. Adams spent his days and nights, until he had made himself master of the principles of the code.
