Major Works:

Miserere composed for the Sistine Chapel, is unusual in that it is scored for 9 voice parts. The parts are divided among 2 choirs, one with 4 voices and the other with 5.
Other Information:
Allegri was a Catholic priest. He composed church music of which his Miserere was most famous. The Catholic church forbade the publication of the work under penalty of excommunication. Mozart, however, was so impressed with the Miserere that he violated the law and wrote it out by memory after hearing it only twice. Allegri, Gregorio
ALLEGRI, GREGORIO, Italian priest and musical composer, probably of the Correggio family, was born at Rome either in 1560 or in 1585. He studied music under G. Maria Nanini, the intimate friend of Palestrina. Being intended for the church, he obtained a benefice in the cathedral of Fermo. Here he composed a large number of motets and sacred pieces, which, being brought under the notice of Pope Urban VIII., obtained for him an appointment in the choir of the Sistine Chapel at Rome. He held this from December 1629 till his death on the 18 th

Allegri Gregorio
, a Romish ecclesiastic, whose reputation is founded on his talents as a musical composer, was a pupil of Nanini, and admitted, in 1629, as a singer into the pope’s chapel. Among his most celebrated productions is a “ Miserere ” which was performed during passion-week at the Sixtine chapel, and so highly esteemed that it was forbidden to be copied, under pain of excommunication. Mozart, however, after hearing it twice, was enabled to make out a copy, thought to be equal to the original. In 1773, the pope presented a complete one to George III . It had been previously engraven in London , about 1771. Allegri was of the same family with Corregio, and died Feb. 16, 1640. He was a man of a devout and benevolent disposition, and was frequent in his charitable visits to prisoners, and other persons in distress. Ibid.—Burney’s Hist. of Music, vol. III , and Italian Tour.—Hawkins’s History of Music. A B C D ... Z Entry taken from General Biographical Dictionary , by Alexander Chalmers, 1812–1817.

Gregorio Allegri
Gregorio Allegri was born around 1582 in Rome. The earliest record we have of his career is when he joined the choir school at S. Luigi dei Francesi in Rome in 1591. He stayed there until 1596, when his soprano voice broke. We next hear of him on his return to S. Luigi in 1600 when he rejoined the choir as a contralto and began his musical studies with the maestro di cappella at S. Luigi, Giovanni Bernardino Nanino. About 1607 he left Rome to take up a post as singer and composer at the cathedral in Fermo at the outskirts of the papal state. He apparently stayed there until 1628, when he returned to Rome to take the competitive examination for admittance to the papal choir. He successfully completed the exam and became a part of the choir in 1629. In addition to the prestige of belonging to this organization, and the attendant guaranteed salary for life, Allegri enjoyed the opportunity to study and consult with some of the finest musical minds of his time. During the next 23 years until his death on February 7, 1652, Allegri composed a number of masses, motets, and a small number of instrumental works, including a four-part sonata for string ensemble that might be considered an important early prototype string quartet, written as it was over a century before Haydn's first efforts in the form. Allegri's masterpiece
