In a Lonely Place (1950). George Antheil /actually, today is in a *happy* place/
Some expected and unexpected surprises this Christmas:
  • The local seven-year-old was wired last night and didn't get to sleep until 11:30pm. This meant I had to hurry to get things done and get to sleep before Santa Claus arrived. This morning, the local seven-year-old asked why Santa's handwriting looked suspiciously similar to the spouse's and then asked for another signature sample to compare more closely. Said child also thought it odd the CD from Santa still had a Rasputin Music tag on it. On the CD front, I received a 12-CD set of the late Pavarotti. The local seven-year-old asked I play the remaining 11 CDs some other time. I got some choice books as presents. Those relevant to this blog, expected and unexpected: The Rest Is Noise by Alex Ross and Ten Great American Composers Finally, I received a requested DVD of Nicholas Ray's

New York Occupation Composer pianist author , and inventor George Antheil (July 8, 1900 – February 12, 1959) was an American avant-garde composer pianist ... author and inventor . A self-described "Bad Boy of Music", his modernist compositions amazed and appalled listeners in Europe and the US during the 1920s with its cacophonous celebration of mechanical devices. Returning permanently to the US in the 1930s, he turned to writing film-scores in Hollywood and his various compositions for the concert hall, the ballet and films became more tonal. A man of wide interests, Antheil researched female endocrinology, wrote a mystery novel and newspaper advice and music columns, and with the actress Hedy Lamarr patented a frequency-hopping torpedo guidance system.

George Carl Johann Antheil (June 8, 1900 – February 12, 1959) was an American avant-garde composer and pianist who was known for the unusual sounds and instrumentation which he featured in his musical works as well as in film, television, and operatic scores. With associates such as Pablo Picasso , Salvadore Dali, Erik Satie , and Igor Stravinsky , George Antheil became one of the pioneers in searching for alternatives to the traditional tonal system to create fresh new sounds. Known as the "bad boy in music" because of his aesthetic antics, Antheil hoped to awaken his colleagues and audiences to a new reality. He did this by taking the responsibility to initiate a personal and artistic transformation in composers and listeners alike. Antheil's music made individuals look and appreciate all musical sounds in a wider context.

Composer, Pianist, Inventor
Born in 1900, in Trenton , New Jersey, George Antheil (pronounced "ANN-tile") left the States at 22 and had an overnight success in Europe as a concert pianist and avant-garde composer. Antheil became famous for his aggressive style and mechanically inspired works: the , the Airplane Sonata, the Death of Machines. Adopted instantly by Erik Satie, James Joyce, Ezra Pound, and the moderns of Paris , Antheil surprised everyone by converting to neo-classicism in 1926 and subsequently moving back to the United States. After a period of writing for

COURTESY ANTHEIL ESTATE A new photo archive of Antheil and his family is now available at the Other Minds site. About George Antheil Ulysses Antheil wrote over 300 musical works in all major genres, including symphonies, chamber works, film music, and operas. He was extremely outspoken and articulate, and wrote numerous articles, as well as an autobiography, Bad Boy of Music , which is still in print As a young composer, he considered himself to be quite the revolutionary, and his music, especially in his early career, employed many unusual sound sources and combinations of instruments. In many ways, both musical and technical, he was far ahead of his time. His concerts routinely caused riots all over Europe, which at the time was considered a sign of genius. Besides composing, Antheil was an excellent writer, an inventor, and a student of many disciplines, including endocrinology, criminal justice, and military history. He was co-holder of a remarkable patent (with actress Hedy Lamarr) for a "secret communications system" which is today in wide use and known as "spread-spectrum technology" — although neither he nor Lamarr ever received a dime for it.
