He was married four times, first with actress Edel Eckblad from 1936 to 1946, then with actress Elisabeth Thams Jørgensen from 1946. In 1971 he married actress Isabel Andersson, and later journalist and theatre historian Else Martinsen. Olsen took his examen artium in 1928. He started working for the insurance company Idun in 1931, while also studying mathematics at the University of Oslo . He was awarded the University's gold medal for his mathematical work. Home Encyclopedia Summa Fathers ... A > Thomas Augustine Arne Thomas Augustine Arne English composer, b. 12 March 1710, at London ; d. 5 March, 1778. Although of Catholic parentage, he was educated at Eton, and was apprenticed in a solicitor's office for three years. In 1740 he married Cecilia Young, oldest daughter of Charles Young, organist of All Hallows , Barking, a pupil of Geminiani and one of the best singers of her day. Arne wrote the music for Thomson and Mallet's masque of "Alfred", to celebrate the anniversary of the accession of the House of Hanover . It is in this work the well known "Rule Britannia" occurs. In 1742 Arne went to Ireland , and during his sojourn there produced his oratorio "Able" and his operas "Britannia" and "Comus" with great success. On his return, he was engaged again as composer at Drury Lane, and in 1745, in the same capacity at Vauxhall, Ranelagh, and Marylebone Gardens. The University of Oxford conferred the degree of Doctor of Music on Arne, 6 July, 1759. Three years after this, he wrote "Artaxerxes", an opera in the Italian manner, with recitative but no spoken dialogue, taking the text of

Arne's father and grandfather were both upholsterers and both became officials of the City Company of Upholsterers. His grandfather unfortunately fell upon hard times and died in the Marshalsea prison for debtors. Arne's father on the other hand earned enough money not only to rent a large house in Covent Garden but also to have his son Thomas educated at Eton College. But later in life he also managed to lose most of his wealth and had to earn extra cash by acting as a numberer of the boxes at Drury Lane Theatre. The young Arne was so keen on music that he smuggled a spinet into his room and, dampening the sounds with his handkerchief, would secretly practise during the night while the rest of the family slept. He also, according to the musical historian Charles Burney (1726-1814), dressed up as a liveryman in order to gain access to the gallery of the Italian Opera. It was at the opera that Arne first met the musician and composer Michael Festing (d.1752). Festing was a major influence on Arne.
