Here is a fascinating and often surprising collection of mostly early works by the late Sir Malcolm Arnold, from a song written by the 17-year-old composer in 1938, setting words by his adored elder sister Ruth, to another song written in 1963 as a treat for his daughter. In between, a cantata, piano duets and chamber music for winds, alongside more songs and a twinkling piano duet arrangement of one of his most popular works (the second set of English Dances). Many pieces appear on disc for the first time, and the result is a true box of delights, full of Arnolds typical wit and melodic gift.

BIOGRAPHY
Malcolm Arnold b.1921 - d.2006 Sir Malcolm Arnold was born in Northampton in 1921; his early musical influences came from his mother, a fine amateur pianist and, later, from writing and improvising jazz with his brother and friends. Until the early sixties, Arnold composed at a tremendous rate; the Third, Fourth and Fifth Symphonies were commissioned and composed during this time, and Arnold wrote concertos and sonatas for players he particularly admired, including the Guitar Concerto for Julian Bream. Arnold's role as a conductor of his works, both in the concert hall and in the studio for films and recordings, increased at this time and he was composing film scores at the rate of six per year. This hectic pace of life, however, could not be sustained for long and the early sixties saw a period of depression for Arnold and the breakdown of his marriage. In the mid-sixties, he moved to Cornwall where he settled until 1972 with his second wife, becoming closely involved in Cornish musical life; he was made a Bard of the Cornish Gorsedd in 1968 and was awarded the CBE two years later. In 1972 Arnold moved with his family to Dublin, where he wrote the Seventh Symphony, Clarinet Concerto No 2 and the

Read More Read Less Malcolm Arnold was born in 1921 in Northampton, where his father was a well-to-do shoe manufacturer. There was music in the family, both from his father and from his mother, a descendant of a former Master of the Chapel Royal. Instead of the usual period at a public school, he was educated privately at home. As a twelve-year-old he found a new interest in the trumpet and in jazz after hearing Louis Armstrong, and three years later he was able to study the instrument in London under Ernest Hall, subsequently winning a scholarship to the Royal College of Music, where his composition teacher was Gordon Jacob. Two years later he left the College to join the London Philharmonic Orchestra as second trumpet. Meanwhile he had won a composition prize for a one-movement string quartet. It was as an orchestral player that he was able to explore the wider orchestral repertoire, in particular the symphonies of Mahler. Early in the 1939-45 war Arnold was a conscientious objector, in common with a number of other leading musicians. He was allowed to continue his work as an orchestral player, taking the position of first trumpet in the London Philharmonic in 1943. In the same year, however, he volunteered for military service, but was discharged after shooting himself in the foot, playing, thereafter, second trumpet to his teacher Ernest Hall in the BBC Symphony Orchestra and then rejoining the London Philharmonic, where he served as principal trumpet until 1948. During these years he had continued to work as a composer, with a series of successful orchestral compositions, as well as a variety of chamber music.
