Bach, Johann Sebastian
The Brandenberg Concertos Well-Tempered Clavier and Art of the Fugue Bach's fame during his lifetime was due to his ability as an organist more than his reputation as a composer, but since the 19th century he has been hailed as a genius whose work represents the peak of the Baroque era. Bach fathered 20 children, some of whom were also celebrated musicians, and he was the grandfather of noted composer Johann Christian Bach (1735-82) Johann Sebastian Bach was better known as a virtuoso organist than as a composer in his day. His sacred music, organ and choral works, and other instrumental music had an enthusiasm and seeming freedom that concealed immense rigor. Bach's use of counterpoint was brilliant and innovative, and the immense complexities of his compositional style which often included religious and numerological symbols that seem to fit perfectly together in a profound puzzle of special codes still amaze musicians today. Many consider him the greatest composer of all time.

About 'Chorale BWV686 (6 recorders)'
Artist: Bach, Johann Sebastian ( biography Born: 21 March 1685 , Eisenach Died: 28 July 1750 , Leipzig The Artist: One of the greatest composers of all time. Bach wrote hundreds of pieces for organ, choir, as well as many other instruments. He spent most of his life as a church organist and a choir director. His music combines profound expression with clever musico-mathematical feats, like fugues and cannons in which the same melody is played against itself in various ways.

Description
Finalist for the 2001 Pulitzer Prize in Biography. The Learned Musician is an apt subtitle for this intellectual biography, which assesses the career of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) with the scholarly rigor one would expect from a Harvard professor. Opening with a 1737 attack by a critic who labeled Bach a pedant who spoiled the natural beauty of his creations with "an excess of art," Christoph Wolff cogently compares the German composer to English scientist Isaac Newton. Both men "brought about fundamental changes and established new principles" in their chosen fields, he argues; both sought to reveal God's harmonious ordering of their world. While Wolff conscientiously covers the basics of Bach's life, including his two marriages and the musical achievements of his gifted family, the author's primary focus is on his performing (Bach was an unrivaled organist) and composing. Johann Sebastian Bach J.S. Bach was born in Eisenach, Germany, in 1685 and died in 1750 (he was 65 when he died). He came from a long family history of professional muscicians including church organists and composers. Like his father, Johann Ambrosius Bach, J.S. (Johann Sebastian) would learn and surpass him in this art of classical music composing. Bach's childhood wasn't that great as his father passed away when he was 9 and his mother also died when he was a young boy. Although he spent much time with his musically inclined uncles, he also spent time studying and learning from his older brother, Johann Christoph Bach.

IX: Johann Sebastian Bach
Johann Sebastian Bach was born into the musical family of Bachs in Eisenach in 1685. His father, Johann Ambrosius Bach, had held the post of a court trumpeter in Eisenach along with that of head of the town piper band, and according to his household rules, the young Johann Sebastian was trained not only as a clavier player, but on several instruments. From 1693 to 1695 he attended the Lateinschule in Eisenach. In 1694, when he was nine, his mother died, and in 1695, his father. On the death of his father he was taken into the house of his eldest brother, Johann Christoph, who was organist in Ohrdruf. From 1695 to 1700 he attended the Gymnasium there, and also became a pupil of his brother who had studied with Johann Pachelbel in Erfurt, and (according to the 1754 obituary) 'under his guidance he laid the foundations of his keyboard playing.'

. For the citizens of Arnstadt the stormy development of their ambitious organist must have been bewildering. The consistory complained 'that he had hitherto made many curious variations in the chorale, and mingled many strange notes in it;' furthermore they deplored that Bach took no interest in the figured music for the choir. This last clearly indicates that Bach in fact quite consciously devoted himself to the purely organistic, and certainly more to playing than to composing, since very few compositions have been preserved from those years.

Jump to: navigation search Previous (Johann Reuchlin) Next (Johann Strauss I) Johann Sebastian Bach in a 1748 portrait by Haussmann Johann Sebastian Bach (March 21, 1685 – July 28, 1750) was a prolific and versatile German composer and organist of the Baroque era, whose sacred and secular works for choir orchestra and keyboard drew together almost all of the strands of the Baroque style and brought this musical form to its ultimate maturity. Bach composed for every musical category of his time except for the genre of opera , and expanded musical composition in format, quality, and technical exactness through elevated harmonizations, fugues , and intricate melodies . Ultimately, Bach's sole aim was to glorify God , as the designation "Soli Deo Gloria" (“To God Alone the Glory”) was signed on many of his compositions. For Baroque era composers, music was not primarily an exercise in compositional technique but rather had deep spiritual and religious underpinnings. Bach expressed as much, writing, "The purpose and end aim of figured-bass is nothing more than to praise and glorify God. Where this is not the case there can only be infernal scraping and bawling." Bach was influenced greatly by Martin Luther 's assertion that music was, "a gift from God, not a human gift." Luther's concept of music being a form of praise to the Almighty, "a sermon in sound," could be Bach's personal credo with regard to his art.

34. Johann Sebastion Bach
Brief biography from ThinkQuest.
http://library.thinkquest.org/5399/bacrep.htm
Johann Sebastion Bach The greatest genius of the Baroque Period was Johann Sebastion Bach. His career is considered one of the wonders of music.
On March 21, 1685 in Eisenach, Germany Johann Sebastion Bach was born into a large family of musicians. It was no wonder that Bach grew up loving music because his father played the violin while other family members played oboe, organ, and other string instruments.
At the age of 10 both of his parents died and he went to live with his oldest brother Christoph who taught him to play the harpsichord and organ. He sang in the boys' choir while attending school until his voice changed. He studied the violin, but became interested in the organ. He became an organist at Armstad where he began composing.
At the age of 22 he married Maria Barbara Bach. They had seven children. During this time he was appointed as organist and violinist for the Duke of Weimer. At this time, he also composed some of the finest organ music, including Toccata and Fugrie in D minor as well as church cantatas and keyboard suites.
In 1717, at the age of 32, Bach worked for Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Cothen as master of music. He composed much of his orchestra music including "Brandenburg Concertos" and music for the harpsichord and clavichord. In 1720 Bach's wife died and he remarried Anna Magdalena Wulken in 1721. Bach had 13 more children and taught most of them to play musical instruments. He composed the

Biography
German composer known for the Brandenburg concertos, suites, preludes and chorales. Bach came from a long line of musicians and his first major job, at age 18, was church organist. He was cantor for 27 years at St. Thomas's Church in Leipzig. His music is the apotheosis of the dazzlingly intricate fugue and one of the finest exponents of baroque through history. Though he received little recognition during his lifetime, his power continued to exalt, soothe, mystify, delight and instruct well into the 20th century. He was married twice and had more than 20 kids, seven with his first wife and thirteen with the second. Of those who survived, four of his sons became distinguished composers in their own right. In the summer of 1749, his sight began to fail, probably due to glaucoma.
