    Article added in June 2000
After 26 years in the service of the German city of Leipzig, Johann Sebastian Bach died on July 28, 1750. The Bach-year is still young but has already produced two highlights: Mischa Maisky's recordings of Bach's six suites for solo violoncello as well as the most complete Bach-biography until today, written by Christoph Wolff.
Christoph Wolff is modest and stresses the fact that the research on Bach is far from finished. At any time, new sources can be found, as happened during his writing of the biography Johann Sebastian Bach: The Learned Musician . Regarding the composer's works, Wolff estimates that only 15 to 20% of his music has survived. For his time in Weimar alone, around 200 compositions have probably been lost forever. 40% of his cantatas written in Leipzig have never been found.
Wolff concentrates his narrative on the life of Bach, but stresses at the same time the important lack of significant information. He states that it would be possible to write entire chapters on what we do not know or on what is questionable in our knowledge about Bach. Still, Wolff was able in his more than 600 pages, to bring to life the essence of Bach and his personality. The author renounces a detailed analysis of Bach's compositions. This will follow in a separate book to be published on Bach's stylistic and technical developments which will complement the now presented biographical portrait.

Malcolm Boyd's Bach-biography from 1983 has been re-issued in German (2000, DVA). It covers the life and work of Johann Sebastian Bach, who died 250 years ago. The author examines in detail the Bach-dynasty of musicians. Having several generations of a family dedicated to music was nothing unusual at that time, as the examples of the Scarlatti's in Italy, the Couperin's in France and the Purcell's in England show, just to mention the outstanding dynasties.
According to Boyd, Johann Sebastian Bach, born in 1685 in Eisenach, needed a window to open him up new horizons, a catalyst that could help him develop his mature style. After having worked in some minor cities, Weimar became the window, Vivaldi and the style of the Italian modern concert the catalyst. Bach worked there as choirmaster and organist ( Kantor ) from 1708 to 1717. Afterwards, from 1717 to 1723, he moved to Köthen, situated one hundred kilometers north of Weimar. The city was the residence of the Prince of Anhalt-Köthen since 1603. In Bach's time, Prince Leopold was a good violinist, gambist, cellist and bass singer. But after his marriage in December 1721, it quickly became clear that his wife did not share the Prince's passion for music - and for the arts in general. Bach later called her an "

Felix Mendelssohn Ferruccio Busoni and others did just that. It's certainly no secret that Bach derived so many of his flamboyant organ mannerisms from the North German Dietrich Buxtehude , whose major achievement was a sense of capricious invention added to the variation technique of the great English masters, as transmitted via Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck Of course, Bach did not stop with the German school. He also studied Girolamo Frescobaldi Giovanni Maria Trabaci , one of Frescobaldi's most important predecessors, and the most harmonically adventurous of the Neapolitans: "the harpsichord is the lord of all instruments in the world and on it everything may be played with ease." Trabaci was first organist of the Royal Chapel in Naples. If anything, colorful as he is, Frescobaldi simplifies the ideas of Trabaci et. al. and strives for a dynamic harmonic balance at the expense of further chromatic experimentation. In Bach's early harpsichord toccatas, we see an attempt to master this style; the attempt does not go far, lacking familiarity and poise as it does. Then there is France, and Bach's studies of
