BACH MIDI INDEX
Biography (from GROVE) Johannes Sebastian Bach, pastel by Gottlieb Friedrich Bach (ca. 1750) Johann Sebastian Bach . Composer and organist. The most important member of the family, his genius combined outstanding performing musicianship with supreme creative powers in which forceful and original inventiveness, technical mastery and intellectual control are perfectly balanced. While it was in the former capacity, as a keyboard virtuoso, that in his lifetime he acquired an almost legendary fame, it is the latter virtues and accomplishments, as a composer, that by the end of the 18th century earned him a unique historical position. His musical language was distinctive and extraordinarily varied, drawing together and surmounting the techniques, the styles and the general achievements of his own and earlier generations and leading on to new perspectives which later ages have received and understood in a great variety of ways. follows at the biography (large) page [...] His models [of Johann Sebastian Bach], according to Carl Philipp Emanuel, included

74. Johann Sebastian Bach S Achievement
Article examining the role the composer s works had in helping to reunite a Europe torn by post-Reformation conflict even as it became the standard upon which almost all subsequent Western music was based.

Johann Sebastian Bach's Achievement
The Integration of European Music in the Aftermath of the Wars of Religion
I. Two centuries of ideological warfare In this period of millennial perspectives it is appropriate that we study the 3 ideological cataclysms which, over the last 500 years, have shattered the European spiritual continuum:
  • The Catholic-Protestant polarization of western European Christianity . Christianity had frequently put forth divergent branches in previous centuries: Catholic, Eastern Orthodox , Coptic, Bogomil-Cathar, Hussite. among others. The persecution of heretics had a venerable history, nor were murderous conflicts over religious differences uncommon. All this history pales in comparison with the total devastation that overtook Europe through the continuous warfare unleashed by the Reformation and Counter-Reformation during the 16th and 17th centuries. Thus, the Thirty Years War reduced the population of the Lower Palatinate ( The Rhine Valley) by 90%; the state of Wurttemburg by 85%. Three-quarters of the inhabitants of Bohemia ( the modern day Czech Republic) perished .
  • Nationalism versus Feudalism
  • Capitalism versus Communism . Historically the most recent replay of Europe's inherent incapacity to achieve spiritual integrity , the capitalist/communist schism devastated the planet for 7 decades , gripping the consciousness of the mankind as with a band of steel.

    Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750)
With Bach, the Baroque era went out with a bang. Though the seeds of classicism were very much sown during his lifetime, his sons being some of the prime shapers of that movement, Johann Sebastian Bach remained largely fixed in the Baroque traditions yet was able to fashion them as no-one else, either before him or since, into a towering peak of structural grace and formal perfection. It is this supreme craftmanship, largely unrecognised at the time, which has earned Bach an enormous stature in later years among composers and musicians.
    The Bach family
But while his sons were to help found the new school, it was the old school training from the father which sowed this seed. By all accounts, the Bachs became a nerve centre for all things musical in the area, with their extended family of relatives, friends and musicians both local and visiting. It may well be that some of the output from that time would not have survived if Anna Magdelena had not recorded many examples of smaller works in her two "notebook" collections of which the following four pieces are from the 2nd Notebook:

    of Bach's life and surroundings
Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21st l685, the son of Johann Ambrosius (right), court trumpeter for the Duke of Eisenach and director of the musicians of the town of Eisenach in Thuringia. His famous uncle, Johann Christoph Bach, was organist at the Georgenkirche. For many years, members of the Bach family throughout Thuringia had held positions such as organists, town instrumentalists, or Cantors, and the family name enjoyed a wide reputation for musical talent. The 400-year-old Bach-Haus museum stands on the same location as the original Bach family house, and is furnished with materials from Bach's time. cantatas would have been performed in the Castle Chapel (below right). During this period he also composed organ chorales and some early organ preludes. harpsichord and chamber music here. The orchestra was of a high caliber, and the young prince abandoned protocol to join with his musicians on equal terms. 'There I had a gracious Prince as master, who knew music as well as he loved it, and I hoped to remain in his service until the end of my life'.
