81. Johann Sebastian BACH Cantata 198: The TRAUER ODE. Illustrated History, Full Tex
Mourning Ode on the death of Queen Christiana of Poland/Saxony, 1727. Illustrated history, full text, and music samples.

Johann Sebastian BACH:
Cantata 198: The TRAUER ODE
for the Funeral of Queen Christiane Eberhardine of Poland/Saxony.

Performed at a special Memorial Service
held in the University Paulinerkirche, Leipzig, on October 17th, 1727.
Of all Bach's great Cantatas,
the composition and performance of this Trauerode
was probably the most significant to the composer,
the performers and the citizens of Leipzig. In 1697, Friedrich August, Elector of Saxony, assumed the Polish crown, which traditionally passed not through lineage, but on selection by the Polish nobility from eligible candidates. Extensive lobbying by the Saxon Court brought Friedrich August into the Finals, his main opponent being Louis, Prince of Conti. Stories are told of a midnight race from the Polish border to Krakov, then Polish capital. Friedrich August won and claimed the Crown. Louis, so it is said, consoled himself by making off with a substantial part of the Polish Crown Jewels. In addition to the election competition there remained another challenge: the requirement that any king of Poland must be of Catholic faith. Despite the Elector's, and Saxony's solid Lutheran Protestant background, this was no problem for the opportunist Friedrich August who readily acceded, formally adopting Catholicism in Vienna on June 1st, 1697 despite a storm of protest from the strongly Protestant Saxon populace. Feelings were only slightly calmed by a formal announcement on July 27th that Protestantism in Saxony would in no way be jeopardized, as indeed it would not be. In fact the city of Dresden would be enriched by the juxtaposition of religious buildings of both faiths, often unofficially competing for prominence.

Carnegie Foundation Snapshot The Well-Tempered Clavier, by J. S. Bach, is one of the world's great intellectual treasures. Each of its two volumes contains a prelude and fugue in every major and minor key of the chromatic scale. Book I, which was completed in 1722, was the first cycle of compositions in this conception. Book I begins with a prelude in C Major, followed by a fugue in the same key. These are followed by a prelude and fugue in C minor, C#/Db major/minor, D major/minor, etc. Each pair moves up the chromatic scale until every key has been represented. In Book II, which was completed in 1744, Bach effects another complete transversal of the chromatic cycle. One of Bach's primary purposes in composing these cycles was to demonstrate the feasibility of the "well tempered" tuning system that would allow for composition in every key Another purpose of the Well-Tempered Clavier was to reveal how modern and progressive composition could be informed by conservative ideas. Johann Sebastian Bach
Eisenach Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21, 1685 to Johann Ambrosius and Elisabeth Bach in Eisenach, Germany. He was baptized in the Georgenkirche (St. George's Church) on March 23 of the same year. The Bach family was one of several families of musicians who earned their living as town musicians, organists, and cantors. Within one year Johann Sebastian lost both of his parents. His mother died in 1694 and his father in 1695. Of the five surviving children of his family, Johann Sebastian and his brother Johann Jacob went to live with their oldest brother, Johann Christoph, who was organist in Ohrdruf. Ohrdruf Johann Sebastian's brother, Johann Christoph, had been organist at the Michaeliskirche (St. Michael's church) since 1690. He was a student of Johann Pachelbel, a famous Thuringian organist at Erfurt. Johann Sebastian received his first formal keyboard training from his older brother. However, it is thought, given the Bach family traditions and Johann Sebastian's talent, he was most likely already an accomplished musician at the age he moved to Ohrdruf. He also attended the Lyceum in Ohrdruf where he learned Latin and sang in the school choir. When his brother could no longer support him, he moved to Lüneburg with his friend Georg Erdmann on March 15, 1700. Lüneburg In Lüneburg Bach attended the Michaeliskirche and Michaelisschule (St. Michael's church school). Here he participated in the Mettenchor (Matin Choir) to pay for his costs, and played violin and eventually was organist. The school had an impressive musical tradition and had a famous music library in which the great cantor Friedrich Emanuel Praetorius contributed many important music manuscripts and prints. Here Bach learned the great choral works of the old masters and contemporary church music in concertante style.

Acoustic illusions
Endlessly rising melodies:
The Shepard effect
M. C. Escher: Treppauf, treppab - ascending, descending Besides the well-known optical illusions there are acoustic ones, too. Perhaps the most popular acoustics illusion is the effect that was discovered by Shepard: A scale that gives the listener the impression of an endlessly rising melody - but in fact the pitch of the tones does not rise. This way it is possible to play musical pieces that would otherwise cross the human perception threshold. Take the following example: You will hear a very simple melody which seems to rise. Sing with the sound and you will clearly realize that you will get off one octave higher than at the start. But - wait a moment! Replay the sound and verify that the last tone is exacly as high as the first! The illusion is perfect. If you do not believe it, then save the sound file and compare the fist and last tones directly, e.g. with a sound player or editor. Demonstration: Shepard's scale Pseudo-rising scale played on a vibraphone

The 2009/2010 Season ended with a very exciting concert on 17th April 2010 which was almost entirely accompanied by a brass group, Farnaby Brass. The final item was John Rutter's Gloria which was a bit different for choir steeped in baroque music! But we almost got a standing ovation at the end: British audiences are not good a expressing their feeling quite so openly but there were some cheers. The next concert is to be at St James' Church, Exeter, on Saturday 6th November 2010. This is a new venue for us and we will be returning to Purcell, Bach and Handel. We will be singing two JSB Cantatas in Exeter Cathedral with the renamed Voluntary Choir, now called the St Peter's Singers. We are hoping that Brian Kay will be leading another workshop in February next year. And on 2nd April 2011 at St David's Church, Exeter, we will be tackling the great Bach Mass in B minor.

    96. Bach's Method Of Transcription
Study of his compositional ideas using the clavier transcription (BWV 964) of the A minor Sonata for solo violin (BWV 1003). Includes musical notation to illustrate the author s points.
    http://www.delmar.edu/music/faculty/phii/bachtran.html
Bach's Method of Transcription by Philip Hii Among the huge corpus of works by J.S. Bach is a sizeable number of transcriptions. A rather neglected part of the Bach repertory, these transcriptions have only recent]y gained more respectability and interest among scholars and performers. Their impact on the area of performance practice and the study of Bach's compositional process is evident in a number of notable studies.1 Perhaps one of the most neglected of Bach's works in this genre is the relatively obscure clavier transcription (BWV 964) of the A minor Sonata for solo violin (BWV 1003). One of only four surviving clavier sonatas by Bach, the work is a fascinating essay in the art of transcription and is particularly instructive for guitarists as it provides a first-hand look at the concerns and priorities that influenced Bach's compositional process, and resolves some of the more problematical aspects of adapting Bach's music for the guitar. How much, for instance, should technical considerations influence musical content? To what extent do different instrumental idioms play a part in Bach's musical thinking? This study proposes to examine these issues through a comparative analysis of the two versions of the sonata. It will focus primarily on melodic and harmonic differences, concentrating on textural changes, voice leadings, bass alterations, and chordal voicings Two points of particular interest to guitarists concern the practical reasons for these changes and the extent to which Bach's compositional style was influenced by extramusical factors.
