Bach, Wilhelm Friedemann
Born: 1710 AD
Died: 1784 AD, at 73 years of age.
Nationality: German
Categories: Composers
1710 - Wilhelm Friedemann was born 22nd of November in Weimar, Germany. 1733 - Appointed organist of St. Sophia's Church at Dresden. 1746 - Became organist of the Liebfrauenkirche at Halle; his father's influence was enough to secure him the latter position without the usual trial performance. 1762 - Offered the post of Kapellmeister to the court of Darmstadt, but for some reason he did not accept the position. 1764 - He walked off the job in Halle, ending his employment there and indeed his formal employment anywhere. 1784 - Friedemann died 1st of July in great poverty at Berlin. Greatest organ player of his time, his compositions, very few of which were printed, include many church cantatas and instrumental works, of which the most notable are the fugues, polonaises and fantasias for clavier, and the duets for two flutes.

Bach, Wilhelm Friedemann
(b . Nov. 22, 1710, Weimar, Saxe-Weimard. July 1, 1784, Berlin), eldest son of J.S. and Maria Barbara Bach , composer during the period of transition between Baroque and Rococo styles. W.F. Bach's musical instruction was primarily from his father (who wrote for him, when he was ten, the charming of keyboard pieces). He also studied the violin. He matriculated at Leipzig University in 1729. In 1733, already composing extensively, he was appointed organist to the Church of St. Sophia in Dresden. In 1746 he moved to the Liebfrauenkirche at Halle. At about this time, or perhaps later, after his father's death in 1750, he seemed to begin to have personality difficulties, evidenced by excessive drinking and other lapses. After a late marriage in 1751, he became restless and applied unsuccessfully for a change of post in 1753 and 1758. In 1762 he won an appointment to the Darmstadt court but did not take it up. Resigning his old post in Halle in 1764, for 20 years he sought in vain for regular employment. He became touchy and unreliable, and although his talents were never doubted, he imagined that they were. In 1774 he moved to Berlin, where he lived meagrely by giving recitals and teaching. Of his compositions, keyboard works and cantatas form the larger part; he also composed several symphonies and chamber works and an opera. His music vacillated between the Baroque style of his father and the newer

Wilhelm Friedemann Bach
The eldest son of Johann Sebastian Bach , Wilhelm studied composition and organ with his father and at Thomasschule in Leipzig, as well as violin. After studying mathematics and humanities at the University of Leipzig, Bach accepted positions as organist, first in Dresden and then in Halle. In his fifties he relocated to Berlin, where he spent the final two decades of his life. Bach composed for small groups and the orchestra of his day, besides organ and piano. He is closest in temperament and style to J. S. Bach of all the latter's sons. His music lies in the Baroque tradition of harmonic elegance. More an able musician than an unusually gifted one, Wilhelm Freidemann is overshadowed by his brothers, Johann Cristoph Friedrich and especially
