From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Portrait of Balakirev Mily Alexeyevich Balakirev Russian Milij Alekseevič Balakirev [bɐˈlakʲɪrʲef] ) (2 January 1837 O.S. 21 December 1836] – 29 May O.S. 16 May] a 1 was a Russian pianist conductor and composer known today primarily for his work promoting musical nationalism . He began his career as a pivotal figure, extending the fusion of traditional folk music and experimental classical music practices begun by composer Mikhail Glinka . In the process, Balakirev developed musical patterns that could express overt nationalistic feeling. After a nervous breakdown and consequent sabbatical, he returned to classical music but did not wield the same level of influence as he had done previously. In conjunction with critic and fellow nationalist Vladimir Stasov , in the late-1850s and early 1860s Balakirev brought together the composers now known as The Five —the others were Alexander Borodin César Cui Modest Mussorgsky and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov . For several years, Balakirev was the only professional musician of the group; the others were amateurs limited in musical education but possessing enormous potential. He imparted to them his musical beliefs, which continued to underlie their thinking long after he left the group in 1871, and encouraged their compositional efforts. While his methods could be dictatorial, the results of his influence were several works which established these composers' reputations individually and as a group. He performed a similar function for

MILY ALEXEYEVICH BALAKIREV
Mili Alexeyevich Balakirev was born at Nizhny-Novgorod in January 1837, the son of a minor government official. His early piano lessons were with his mother, supplemented by a summer visit to Moscow in 1847, when he had some lessons from Alexander Dubuque, a pupil of John Field. It was later in his schooling that he was introduced, through his teacher, to Alexander Ulibishev, a well-to-do landowner, patron of music and writer of books on Mozart and Beethoven. It was through Ulibishev that he was to receive every encouragement, with access to music and opportunities to hear performances at his house, however inadequate these may sometimes have been. Entry to the musical world of St. Petersburg was effected when Ulibishev took Balakirev there in 1855, introducing him to Glinka, the great pioneer of Russian music, and allowing him the opportunity to give public concerts, with considerable success. Nevertheless Balakirev found difficulty in supporting himself, although the death of Ulibishev in 1858 brought him a legacy of 1000 roubles, two violins and his patron's music library. Balakirev's subsequent career brought him, initially, friendship with Cui, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and Borodin, his meeting with the last-named in late 1862, nine months after the foundation of the Free School of Music that was to occupy his attention for the next ten years. The financial failure of the Free School concerts brought about his withdrawal from music altogether, his eventual resignation from the directorship of the School in 1874 leading to the succession of Rimsky-Korsakov, whom he was to replace in 1881.

... composer . He is perhaps better known today for bringing together the composers known as The Five than for his own music. He was born at Nizhny Novgorod , and had the advantage as a boy of living with Oulibichev, author of a biography of Mozart , who had a private band, and from whom Balakirev obtained a valuable education in music. At eighteen, after a university course in mathematics , he went to Saint Petersburg , full of national ardour, and there made the acquaintance of Mikhail Glinka . Round him gathered Csar Cui and others, and in 1862 the Free School of Music was established. In 1869 Balakirev was appointed director of the imperial chapel and conductor of the Imperial Musical Society . His influence as a conductor, and as an organizer of Russian music, give him the place of a founder of a new movement. His works consist largely of songs and collections of folk songs , but include two symphonies, two symphonic poems Russia and Tamara ), and four

17. Balakirev, Islamey: An Oriental Fantasy
Mily Alexeyevich Balakirev Милий Алексеевич Бала́кирев (January 2, 1837 – May 29, 1910) Islamey an Oriental Fantasy
http://www.circassianworld.com/Balakirev_Islamey.htm
Islamey: an Oriental Fantasy
Islamey: an Oriental Fantasy is a fantasy for piano by Russian composer Mily Balakirev, written in September 1869. Balakirev, a committed nationalist whose music was influenced by Russian traditions, was inspired to write the piece after a trip to the Caucasus, as he relates in a letter:
"...the majestic beauty of luxuriant nature there and the beauty of the inhabitants that harmonises with it all these things together made a deep impression on me... Since I interested myself in the vocal music there, I made the acquaintance of a Circassian prince, who frequently came to me and played folk tunes on his instrument, that was something like a violin. One of them, called Islamey, a dance-tune, pleased me extraordinarily and with a view to the work I had in mind on Tamara I began to arrange it for the piano. The second theme was communicated to me in Moscow by an Armenian actor, who came from the Crimea and is, as he assured me, well known among the Crimean Tartars" (Letter to Reis, 1892).
The piece was composed in the course of one month, in stark contrast to Balakirev's usual habit of taking sometimes years to complete a work. It is divided into three distinct parts, an opening which introduces the main theme, a middle that introduces an entirely new theme (both described in the above quote), and a third which returns to the main theme.

Balakirev, Mily Alekseyevich
Mily Alekseyevich Balakirev, b. Jan. 2, 1837, d. May 29, 1910, was a leading Russian nationalist composer. Balakirev received his earliest musical training from his mother. He was precocious, and at the age of 14 he was made conductor of an orchestra of the nobleman Aleksandr Oulibishev, who became his patron. In 1855 Balakirev moved to Saint Petersburg, where he met Mikhail GLINKA , who encouraged him, and for a brief period he was a concert pianist. Within a few years he had become the leader of a famous group of musicians known as The FIVE (which included Aleksandr BORODIN , Cesar CUI, Modest MUSSORGSKY , and Nikolai RIMSKY- KORSAKOV ). As a champion of nationalism, he wrote a number of works based on Russian folk themes and collected and arranged many Russian folk songs. Balakirev was one of the founders (1862) of the Free Music School in Saint Petersburg and was director (1883-95) of the Court Chapel. Among his best-known works are the piano fantasy Islamey, the overture Russia, and the symphonic poem Tamara. He also wrote symphonies, piano concertos, chamber music, choral works, and many songs.
