This is a much-needed corrected and revised version of the essay hurriedly put together a couple of years ago for this site. It also now includes a few photos some of which have kindly been supplied by Anton Bantock, GB's grandson, from his recently collated set of prints. see new booklet This is a long article (15 A4 sides)

oeuvre are some of the noblest and individual creations of the last hundred years. Such was the scale of his musical intent and the breadth of his inspiration, his music when occasioned, as in some of his piano arrangements for example, simply reveals the everyday embellishment of his skill, mere divertissement, and the more immediately practical and professional musicality of the commercial commission - unlike a number of other more monied composers, GB depended on his music for a living his neglect is unwarranted. If the recent 50th anniversary of his death was met with only a minimal recognition in the hegemonic echelons of our musical polity, then the recent set of CD recordings, particularly on the Hyperion label, has once again laid before us the true musical stature of some of his greatest scores and will hopefully help to bring about a renewed interest in the composer.

GRANVILLE BANTOCK
Granville Bantock was originally intended for the Indian Civil Service. The son of a Scottish doctor, he was born in London in 1868 and turned to music relatively late in adolescence, entering the Royal Academy in 1889 after a period of Trinity College of Music. Under his teacher Federick Corder, a former pupil of Hiller in Cologne, he did well enough to have a number of his student compositions performed at the Academy, including a one-act opera, Caedmar , and Egyptian ballet suite from the incidental music to his own play Rameses II, a dramatic cantata, The Fire Worshippers , and Wulstan , a scena for baritone and orchestra, all marks of his very considerable ambition. In 1893 he left the Academy and for the next three years edited The New Quarterly Music Review He followed this with an ambitious London concert devoted entirely to the music of contemporary British composers, most of whom are now forgotten, except for Bantock himself.

Sir Granville Ransome Bantock (right) was an active promoter of music, including that of his native England, throughout his life. An outstanding educator of a wide range of music, Bantock was also Principal of the Birmingham and Midland Institue of Music (1900-1914) and Peyton Professor at Birmingham University from 1908-1934, in succession to Elgar. A champion of contemporary composers such as Debussy, Richard Strauss and particularly Sibelius (whose Third Symphony is dedicated to him), Bantock was a composer of large-scale music, such as these symphony-tone poems presented here. Although the period of his life spans the core Modernist periods, his music is completely accessible, full of easily remembered melodies of great Romantic lusciousness and modern epic scale. (Some biographical information extracted from notes provided in CD sleeve by Michael Hurd.)

Hyperion CDA66899 When I heard the Hyperion recording of Sappho I was "Knocked Sideways", to use the words of the young Benjamin Britten on his first hearing of Frank Bridge's "Enter Spring". When the record reviewers get round to this disc they will be reaching for the superlatives and it would not surprise me if it were to end up as Gramophone's Record of the Year. Sappho is a sensual and voluptuous orchestral song cycle for mezzo voice that has been virtually hidden for 90 years. Bantock creates a warm-textured thickly upholstered sound that has been caught to perfection by the engineer (Tony Faulkner) with a perfect balance between a large orchestra and the soloist, the mezzo, Susan Bickley. Following an orchestral prelude, there are nine songs and the work lasts fully an hour. Surviving fragments were collated and translated by Henry Wharton in 1885 and it was from this that Helen Bantock worked. One poem
