Institute of Music

(Founded in 1997)
One of the characteristic landmarks of the inner city of Miskolc is the Palace of Music built in 1927 which housed the City School of Music, established in 1904. The institution, which has changed its name several times, was integrated into the University of Miskolc in 1997. At present its official name is: Bartk Bla Institute of Music of the University of Miskolc. The development of the music schools of Northern Hungary has created a high demand for teachers of music. In 1963 the Miskolc Symphony Orchestra became an independent organisation. Our institute trains the new generations of orchestra members. These factors played a decisive role in the formation of the departments of the institute.
The following four specialisations are offered:
Piano: besides the main subject, other subjects related to this instrument are also taught (piano teaching, piano accompaniment, accompaniment by playing at sight, chamber music).
String instruments: violin, viola, cello, double bass, guitar.

(Redirected from Béla Bartók Jump to: navigation search Previous (Bel and the Dragon) Next (Bela Kun) Béla Bartók in 1927 Béla Viktor János Bartók (March 25, 1881 – September 26, 1945) was a Hungarian composer, pianist and collector of Eastern European and Middle Eastern folk music. Bartók is considered one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century. He was one of the pioneers in the field of ethnomusicology, the anthropology or ethnography of music His pioneering efforts in the field of ethnomusicology with his colleague, composer Zoltan Kodaly , contributed to the interest in collecting, studying and documenting folk music of indigenous cultures. This aspect of his musical life was as important as his composing, for it was through his efforts in the area of ethnomusicology that a greater appeciation of music of other cultures would inevitably lead to the breaking down of cultural barriers and in so doing, provide a greater understanding of "the other."

Bela Bartok, b. Mar. 25, 1881, d. Sept. 26, 1945, was one of the greatest and most influential composers of the 20th century. A Hungarian, he studied piano and composition at the Budapest Academy of Music, where he was appointed professor of piano in 1907.
Embittered by the hostile reception of his early works, Bartok began to collect Hungarian and other folk music. Until 1936 he traversed the Balkans, Turkey, and parts of North Africa searching for indigenous material, and with his friend, the composer Zoltan KODALY, he produced a series of important studies, anthologies, and arrangements of folk songs.
During the 1920s, Budapest audiences became less hostile to Bartok's music, and performances of his one-act opera Duke Bluebeard's Castle (1911), and ballets The Wooden Prince (1914-16) and The Miraculous Mandarin (1919) were well received. Bartok traveled widely in Europe as a pianist, and in 1927-28 he toured the United States.

BARTÓK BÉLA ÚT
The cobbles have gone now, but Bartók, like Mester utca in the ninth district has that unique Magyar street ambience.
Others with their flashy palaces of denim and burger bars could be confused with streets running through other great cities of Europe.
The cobblestones are called macskakővek in Hungarian, meaning 'cat stones'.
However, this all changed in 2003.
In November, work began to remove the cobbles over which rattled the second largest stream of downtown-headed traffic. Every day 600,000 people jiggled along the painful route. The builders moved in and replaced the ancient electricity, gas, water and sewage systems.
After an agreement on the fourth metro line, the station diaphragm walls were sunk at Gellért tér, Móricz Zsigmond körtér, Kosztolányi Dezsô tér and Tétény út. Tram tracks and sidewalks were replaced and the green areas were given new park benches, flower pots and bollards.
Although the street looks a bit smarter, and the trams run more smoothly, the atmosphere has changed little.
At Móricz Zsigmond körtér there is a piano repair workshop and at the Budai Parkszínpad beside the Bottomless Lake (Feneketlen tó) at Kosztolányi Dezsô tér there are concerts by widely varying popular artists from Roma rap Fekete Vonat to guitar troubadour Péter Gerendás.
