He is considered to have been the most crucial figure in the transitional period between the Classical and Romantic eras in Western classical music , and remains one of the most famous and influential composers of all time. Born in Bonn , then the capital of the Electorate of Cologne and a part of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation in present-day Germany , he moved to Vienna in his early twenties and settled there, studying with Joseph Haydn and quickly gaining a reputation as a virtuoso pianist. His hearing began to deteriorate in the late 1790s, yet he continued to compose, conduct , and perform, even after becoming completely deaf

BEETHOVEN MIDI INDEX
Large collection of Classical MIDI of Beethoven's music
Biography (from GROVE) Ludwig van Beethoven Ludwig van Beethoven . German composer. Early achievements, as composer and performer, show to be extending the Viennese Classical tradition that Beethoven had inherited from Mozart and Haydn. As personal affliction deafness, and the inability to enter into happy personal relationships loomed larger, he began to compose in an increasingly individual musical style, and at the end of his life he wrote his most sublime and profound works. From his success at combining tradition and exploration and personal expression, Beethoven came to be regarded as the dominant musical figure of the 19th century, and scarcely any significant composer since his time has escaped his influence or failed to acknowledge it. For the respect his works have commanded of musicians, and the popularity they have enjoyed among wider audiences, Beethoven is probably the most admired composer in the history of Western music [ (From Grove Enc. of Music)

Welcome to the Unheard Beethoven!
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) was one of the greatest, if not the greatest, composer to ever live. Most people are familiar with a few of his works, if nothing more than the beginning of the Fifth Symphony, the Finale of the Ninth Symphony and the "Moonlight" Sonata. Beethoven of course wrote a great deal more than those well-known works; one catalog of his compositions runs to 849 separate items. While several hundred of these works have been recorded on one medium or another, there still remain literally hundreds of other works which have never been recorded at all, or which have never been published in widely available editions or in some cases, never published at all! There are thus hundreds of Beethoven works which, until now, have been available only to scholars and specialists. This website endeavors to make all of Beethoven's unrecorded music readily accessible to the public. Now YOU may judge for yourself as to whether these pieces deserve a wider hearing and the ability to join the repertoire. These never-before-heard works are now available to anyone with a computer, a modem and a soundcard, in the form of MIDI files. Our rule of thumb has been that if a work has been recorded and is readily available, we will not produce a MIDI file, concentrating instead on the works which are not otherwise available. At present, over twelve hours of Beethoven's music is available on this website and in no other listenable format.

Beethoven: biography Ludwig van Beethoven was baptised on December 17th 1770 at Bonn. His family originated from Brabant, in Belgium. His father was musician at the Court of Bonn, with a definite weakness for drink. His mother was always described as a gentle, retiring woman, with a warm heart. Beethoven referred to her as his "best friend". The Beethoven family consisted of seven children, but only the three boys survived, of whom Beethoven was the eldest.

the lives of Beethoven's ancestors
At an early age, Beethoven took an interest in music, and his father taught him day and night, on returning to the house from music practice or the tavern. Without doubt, the child was gifted, and his father Johann envisaged creating a new Mozart, a child prodigy. On March 26th 1778, at the age of 7 1/2, Beethoven gave his first know public performance, at Cologne. His father announced that he was 6 years old. Because of this, Beethoven always thought that he was younger than he actually was. Even much later, when he received a copy of his baptism certificate, he thought that it belonged to his brother Ludwig Maria, who was born two years before him, and died as a child.

Beethoven, Ludwig Van (17701827) German composer, generally considered one of the greatest composers in the Western tradition.
http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/B/beethoven/2.ht
Beethoven, Ludwig Van German composer, generally considered one of the greatest composers in the Western tradition. Born in Bonn, Beethoven was reared in stimulating, although unhappy, surroundings. His early signs of musical talent were subjected to the capricious discipline of his father, a singer in the court chapel. In 1789, because of his father's alcoholism, the young Beethoven became a court musician in order to support his family. His early compositions under the tutelage of German composer Christian Gottlob Neefe -particularly the funeral cantata on the death of Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II in 1790-signaled an important talent, and it was planned that Beethoven study in Vienna, Austria, with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart . Although Mozart's death in 1791 prevented this, Beethoven went to Vienna in 1792 and became a pupil of Austrian composer Joseph Haydn
In Vienna, Beethoven dazzled the aristocracy with his piano improvisations. Meanwhile, he entered into increasingly favorable arrangements with Viennese music publishers. In composition he steered a middle course between the stylistic extravagance of German composer Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and what the public had perceived as the overrefinement of Mozart. The broadening market for published music enabled Beethoven to succeed as a freelance composer, a path that Mozart, a decade earlier, had found full of frustration.

Beethoven in Vienna
A walk in Vienna and its environs can reveal some of the places where the composer lived. Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, and Brahms (among others) are symbolized in Vienna not only with monuments but also with museums (two, in Schubert's case: his birthplace, and the house in which he died), but it is Beethoven who is represented most. With several museums devoted to him, some of which contain his own personal effects, there exist in and around Vienna more sites associated with Beethoven than with any other composer who graced the city. Though born in Bonn, Beethoven spent most of his adult life in the Austrian capital. His birthplace is now an important archive and museum, containing the most comprehensive Beethoven collection in the world, but he lived there only for the first four years of his life. The Bonn house in which he grew to young manhood was destroyed during the Second World War. He first journeyed to Vienna at 17, in 1787, hastened back to Bonn at the news his mother was dying, and returned to Vienna, ultimately for good, in 1792. He undertook some concert tours to Prague, Leipzig and Berlin (1795), to Pressburg and Budapest (1800), and stayed briefly at the health spas in Teplitz and Karlsbad, but from 1792 onward his stay in Vienna was permanent.
