JOHN BENNET
The exact dates of the birth and death of the English madrigal composer John Bennet are unknown, although his first collection of madrigals was published in 1599. The English madrigal, derived from earlier Italian models, is a significant element in the vocal music of the later 16th century, the age of Queen Elizabeth I. Vocal Music Bennet's most popular madrigals are Weep, o mine eyes, apparently based on John Dowland's famous Flow, my teares, one of the most internationally famous of all songs of the period, and All creatures now, part of the collection of madrigals by a number of composers in praise of Queen Elizabeth I, under the guise of Oriana, Queen of the Shepherds. 6. HOASM: John Bennet
Biography and partial discography.
http://www.hoasm.org/IVM/Bennet.html
John Bennet
(c.1570-after 1614)
English composer. Probably from northwestern England. His works consist of a book of madrigals for four voices (London, 1599), one madrigal in The Triumphes of Oriana (1601), two consort songs, four Psalm settings and a prayer in Barley's psalter of ca. 1599, a verse anthem, and six secular vocal pieces in Ravenscroft 's A Briefe Discourse ( 1614). The madrigals include both solemn and lighter works, Many are clearly modeled on the style cultivated by Thomas Morley , but influences from Weelkes Wilbye , and Dowland are also evident. The consort songs and the anthem show an awareness of earlier English styles.

Very little is known about him. The date of his birth is unknown. He died in September 1784, after serving as organist at St. Dionis Backchuch Fenchurch, London for over thirty years. He was a pupil of Johann Christoph Pepusch . Beechey 1969 provides more detail than can be found in Groves about him. He has been referred to citation needed as the typical versatile eighteenth-century English musician, playing the organ, teaching the harpsichord , playing the viola , and performing at Drury Lane Theatre as a singer in the chorus and as a ballet dancer. According to Mortimer’s The Universal Director (1763) he lived at Queen-square Bloomsbury , and succeeded Charles Burney as organist at St.
