Berg , Alban
Viennese pupil of Schoenberg who brought to maturity the atonal style of 20th-century music. Under Schoenberg's guidance, Berg moved from a tonal approach to a purely atonal style over the course of his first three works. In 1914 he saw a production of George Buchner's play Woyzeck. The play had a great impact on Berg, and he transformed the work into an opera (Wozzeck). Through his next works, Berg embraced the twelve-tone procedure more fully. The Lyric Suite (1926), his Violin Concerto (1935) and Lulu, his second opera, left incomplete at his death. Berg's life came to an early end. In the fall of 1935 a simple insect bite turned into fatal blood poisoning. He died on Christmas Eve. www link :

Mahler , Gustav
Bohemian composer and conductor of the Vienna Court Opera. In his world music he used huge orchestras, the largest for his 'Symphony for a Thousand'. Mahler's aim was to preserve the tradition of composers of the past, but in his composition he embodied many of the new ideas of modernism and fostered the music of his more radical contemporaries, such as Arnold Schoenberg. Vienna was a city with deep undercurrents of anti-Semitism - Mahler had to renounce Judaism and convert to Catholicism. In spite of this he had to leave the city and emigrated to the United States.

Jump to: navigation search Previous (Albacore) Next (Albania) Portrait of Alban Berg by Arnold Schoenberg , c.1910 Alban Maria Johannes Berg (February 9, 1885 – December 24, 1935) was an Austrian composer . He was a member of the Second Viennese School along with Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern , producing works that combined Mahlerian romanticism with a highly personal adaptation of Schoenberg's twelve-tone technique. Alban Berg's musical philosophy was to translate poetry into music and theatre into musical action. He preferred that his music serve all actions at every moment to become an aid towards a spiritual reality in a corporeal world. Along with Schoenberg and Webern he was one of the pivotal composers of the early twentieth century.

Life and work
Berg was born in Vienna , the third of four children of Johanna and Conrad Berg. His family lived quite comfortably until the death of his father in 1900. He was more interested in literature than music as a child and did not begin to compose until he was fifteen, when he started to teach himself music. He had very little formal music education until he began a six-year period of study with Arnold Schoenberg in October 1904 to 1911, studying

Berg, Alban
(b. Feb. 9, 1885, Viennad. Dec. 24, 1935, Vienna), Austrian composer in the atonal style. He composed orchestral music (including Five Orchestral Songs, 1912), chamber music, songs, and two sensational operas, Wozzeck (1925) and Lulu Apart from a few short musical trips abroad and annual summer sojourns in the Austrian Alps, Berg's life was spent in the city of his birth. At first, the romantically inclined youth leaned toward a literary career. But, as in most Viennese middle-class homes, music was regularly played in his parents' house, in keeping with the general musical atmosphere of the city. Encouraged by his father and older brother, Alban Berg began to compose music without benefit of formal instruction. His output consisted of more than 100 songs and piano duets, most of which remain unpublished. In September 1904 he met Arnold Schoenberg , an event that decisively influenced his life. The death of Berg's father had left little money for composition lessons, but Schoenberg was quick to recognize Berg's talent and accepted the young man as a free pupil. The musical precepts and the human example provided by Schoenberg shaped Berg's artistic personality for the next six years. In the circle of Schoenberg's students, Berg presented his first public performance in the fall of 1907:
