Berio was born at Oneglia (now part of Imperia ). He was taught the piano by his father and grandfather who were both organists . During World War II he was conscripted into the army, but on his first day he injured his hand while learning how a gun worked, and spent time in a military hospital. Following the war, Berio studied at the Milan Conservatory under Giulio Cesare Paribeni and Giorgio Federico Ghedini . He was unable to continue studying the piano because of his injured hand, so instead concentrated on composition. In 1947 came the first public performance of one of his works, a suite for piano . Berio made a living at this time accompanying singing classes, and it was in doing this that he met American

Berio, Luciano
Oneglia (now Imperia) 1925 - 2003
Biography
With Bruno Maderna, Berio is one of the founders of the Centro di Fonologia Musicale of Italian Radio Rai in Milano (1954), which was born in the fervent atmosphere of the post-war period not long after those in Cologne and Paris. Luciano Berio was formed by the Conservatory of Milan under Ghedini, and in the United States under Dallapiccola. Ha kept courses of composition in Darmstadt, Darlington (Summer School), California (Mills College), and at the Harvard University and Juilliard School in New York (1965-71); he also worked at the Columbia University. In 1975 he was head of a department of IRCAM in Paris. The use of electronic music (Thema, Diffrences, Momenti, Visage) influenced the study of traditional music produced by Berio which can be seen in the wide range of sound resources he uses, in the means of communication and the variation of musical languages he uses, drawing often from Folk and pop music (see Beatles). Music for theatre
Berio's pieces for theatre: Allez-hop! (1959), Passaggio (1963), Traces (1964), Laborintus II (1965), Opera (1970), La vera Storia (1982), Un Re in ascolto (1983), Outis (1996).

Luciano Berio (1925-2003) According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music , Luciano Berio is an Italian composer, pupil of Dallapiccola; has employed spatial effects, e.g. in "Circles" (text by E.E. Cummings) for voice, harp, and 2 percussion; has also written electronic music, and works allowing free choice by performers. A series of pieces each called "Sequence" ( sequenza ) is for different solo instruments - no. 5 for trombone, no. 6 for viola. His Sinfonia (orchestra, organ, piano, harpsichord, chorus, reciters) incorporates a section of Mahler's symphony no. 2.
in an article on Berio's Gesti in "The Recorder and Music Magazine" (November 1966) also says that "Gesti" can be thought of as a little sequenza

Birthday celebration has long coda
By Mary Campbell, Associated Press writer
NEW YORK Composer Luciano Berio is past 72 now, but celebrations of his 70th birthday go on and on.
That's the one that triggered a plethora of music festivals, prestigious awards and world premieres in his honor. His works have been performed by major orchestras in Europe and America. Japan gave him its Praemium Imperiale, which it considers the Nobel Prize of the arts.
In New York, the 92nd Street Y presented a three-hour concert of all Berio's "Sequenzas," virtuoso pieces in which he explores far-out possibilities of solo instruments. A recording of the "Sequenzas" is due out next summer.
Berio is often described as Italy's most important composer of the second half of the century. A year ago, a New York Times critic called his "A King Listening" one of the great operas.
For two days this fall, Carnegie Hall kept Berio busy with workshops for composers of electronic music, media interviews, a major concert featuring U.S. premieres of two of his pieces, and a small concert in Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall with his "Sequenza for C Trumpet" and music by three former students of composition.
One of the new works presented at Carnegie Hall was "Ofanim," which means "Wheels" in Hebrew.
