He is noted for his experimental music work (in particular his 1968 musical composition Sinfonia for voices and orchestra) and also for his pioneering work in electronic music . Many were waiting for a time to be independent from the limitations of traditional musical instruments and scalar patterns and Luciano Berio became one of the teachers who helped to develop an understanding and self-confidence in this expansion of new music in the mid-twentieth century.

piano by his father and grandfather who were both organists. During World War II he was conscripted into the army, but on his first day he injured his hand while learning how a gun worked. He spent time in a military hospital, before fleeing to fight in anti-Nazi groups. Following the war, Berio studied at the Milan Conservatory under Giulio Cesare Paribeni and Giorgio Federico Ghedini. He was unable to continue studying the piano because of his injured hand, so instead concentrated on composition. In 1947 came the first public performance of one of his works, a suite for piano. Berio made a living at this time accompanying singing classes, and it was in doing this that he met American mezzo-soprano Cathy Berberian, whom he married shortly after graduating (they divorced in 1964). Berio would write many pieces exploiting her versatile and unique voice.

Berio, Luciano
(b . Oct. 24, 1925, Oneglia, Italy), Italian musician whose success as theorist, conductor, composer, and teacher placed him among the leading representatives of the musical avant -garde. His style is notable for combining lyric and expressive musical qualities with the most advanced techniques of electronic and aleatoric music. Berio studied composing and conducting at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Milan, and in 1952 he received a Koussevitzky Foundation scholarship at Tanglewood, Mass., where he studied under the influential composer Luigi Dallapiccola. With another leading Italian composer, Bruno Maderna, he founded (1954) the Studio di Fonologia Musicale at Milan Radio. Under Berio's direction until 1959, it became one of the leading electronic music studios in Europe. There he attacked the problem of reconciling electronic music with musique i.e., composition using as raw material recorded sounds such as storms or street noises rather than laboratory-created sounds). Berio and Maderna also founded the journal Incontri Musicali ("Musical Encounters"), a review of avant-garde music.

Luciano Berio (1925-2003)
One of Italy's greatest avant-garde composers, Luciano Berio was born in 1925 to a musical family that eagerly guided him into the world of composition. He studied at Milan until 1951, and then set upon a long career of living alternately in Italy and the United States, studying under various modernist masters and forging his own unique style. In 1950 he married American singer Cathy Berberian, and many of his pieces are written for her voice. From 1955 to 1960, he directed the "Studio di Fonologia Musicale," a center for electronic music which he and Bruno Maderna had founded at RAI (Italian Radio). After another decade of living in America, he returned to Italy and founded "Centro Tempo Reale," an institute for music research which drew together musicians and computer science experts in order to advance and explore new forms of composition.
Of the same generation as Cage, Boulez and Stockhausen, Berio pioneered modernism in music and the use of electronics to explore new musical frontiers. He employed a myriad of idioms and techniques during his long and prolific career, specializing in works for the voice, "chance" music, serialism, electronic music, and most famously, a series of virtuoso solo pieces called "Sequenzia." Berio was also fascinated with literature, particularly twentieth century modernism and postmodernism. Italo Calvino wrote the text for two of Berio's stage works, and his work in Italian radio led him to a friendship with Umberto Eco. It was perhaps only natural that he should turn to Joyce and Beckett for musical inspiration.

Remembering the Future

Berio, Luciano
ISBN:
EDITION: BINDING: PUBLISHER: Harvard University Press (05/01/2006) PAGES: This product is not available.
SUMMARY In "Remembering the Future" Luciano Berio shares with us some musical experiences that "invite us to revise or suspend our relation with the past and to rediscover it as part of a future trajectory." His scintillating meditation on music and the ways of experiencing it reflects the composer's profound understanding of the history and contemporary practice of his art. There is much in this short book that provides insight on Berio's own compositions. Indeed, he comments that writing it "led me to formulate thoughts that might otherwise have remained concealed in the folds of my work." He explores themes such as transcription and translation, poetics and analysis, "open work," and music theater. The reader will also find here numerous insights on the work of other composers, past and present, and much more. A figure of formidable intellect, Berio ranges easily among topics such as Schenkerian analysis, the criticism of Carl Dahlhaus and Theodor Adorno, the works of his friends and sometime collaborators Italo Calvino and Umberto Eco. But Berio carries his learning lightlyhis tone is conversational, often playful, punctuated by arresting aphorisms: "The best possible commentary on a symphony is another symphony."
