The great 19 th century French composer Hector Berlioz holds a unique place in musical history. Far ahead of his time, he was one of the most original of great composers, but also an innovator as a practical musician, and a writer and critic whose literary achievement is hardly less significant than his musical output. Few musicians have ever excelled in all these different fields at once.

Hector Berlioz
Louis-Hector Berlioz (December 11, 1803 - March 8, 1869) was born in southeastern France, near Grenoble. On a clear day, he could see the Alps and Mont Blanc. He received the bulk of his education primarily at home from his father, a prosperous and well-regarded doctor. His studies included Latin and music. He learned the flute well enough to consider it for a profession and, by all accounts, became an astonishing performer on the guitar. His passion, however, was going through scores, particularly of the 18 th He worked conscientiously at his medical studies for a year and spent much of his free time at the library of the Paris Conservatoire poring over scores. He even copied out an entire Gluck opera. At the end of the year, he told his father he would not go back to medicine. This caused a painful break between the two, but his father wisely decided to let him continue with music and set only one condition: that he pass the baccalaureate examination.

Biography
French composer, conductor, critic and writer of books on music. Known for his orchestrating genius with program music, his works included symphonies, voice and choral numbers, oratorios and operas. The son of a country doctor who rebelled against his dad, he went to Paris with no musical training and within eight years had written one of the world's greatest symphonies, the "Symphonie fantastique" which mirrored his passion for the Irish actress Harriet Smithson and which can always fill a modern concert hall. Berlioz often complained of French bureaucratic interference in musical life. When he was commissioned in 1837 to write a requiem for the 1830 revolution, he said he had to camp out in the government offices to get paid. A man full of contradictions, he was an idealist but also extremely practical. As a composer he was concerned with every detail, the layout of the orchestra, how to organize a concert, how to publicize it. Life was always a struggle for Berlioz. He could not make his music pay and his love affairs were not very successful. Whenever he met a woman who seemed to be ideal, he would go overboard and then find that reality was a cold lesson. He found it difficult to find a woman to feel as passionately about him as he was about her.
