William Billings
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search William Billings (b. Boston , October 7, 1746 – d. Boston , September 26, 1800) was an American choral composer , and is widely regarded as the father of American choral music. Originally a tanner by trade, and lacking formal training in music, Billings created what is now recognized as a uniquely American style. "He had one eye, a deformed arm and a harsh voice; he was lame in one leg; and he was addicted to snuff At the age of 14 his father's death stopped his formal schooling. He was married with six children. Billings died in poverty on September 26, 1800. His funeral was announced in the Columbian Centinel "Died- Mr. William Billings, the celebrated music composer. His funeral will be tomorrow at 4 o'clock, PM from the house of Mrs. Amos Penniman, in Chamber-street, West-Boston." Psalm-Singer's Amusement by Billings, "printed and sold by the author at his house near the White Horse , Boston," 1781 Psalm-Singer's Amusement by Billings, 1781

WILLIAM BILLINGS
by John H. Lienhard
Click here for audio of Episode 1188. Today, we meet America's first significant composer. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. A nyone who's done much choral singing has sung William Billings's music. Ask what music came out of Colonial America: we get Billings and little more. Few sophisticated musicians think much of him I love his stuff. Historians have made little effort to know Billings. The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians runs to almost 20,000 pages and it gives Billings only a page and a half. Billings was born in Boston in 1747. He was poor and uneducated he supported himself much of the time as a tanner. But he also took up music when he was young and was teaching choral singing by the age of 22. Biographers call him a gargoyle. He was blind in one eye with a short leg and a withered arm. But that's only the beginning. He practiced what a contemporary called "an uncommon negligence of person," and he was hopelessly addicted to tobacco constantly inhaling handfuls of snuff. That may explain why he only lived to the age of 54. He had a stentorian, tobacco-damaged bass voice and he seemed uninterested in any easy beauty of sound.

William Billings Born 7 October 1746, Boston.
Died 26 September 1800, Boston. Bizarre of appearance (one-eyed, one-legged, and unkempt) and colorful of career (by turns as tanner, teacher, and civil servant), Billings was America's first major composer. The New-England Psalm-Singer, a collection of 120 vocal works (with frontispiece engraved by Paul Revere), was the first published edition of American music; The Singing Master's Assistant enjoyed immense circulation, in part, owing to its politically inflammatory lyrics. "Chester," Billings's famous and stirring Revolutionary hymn, might well be compared in function and effect to Martin Luther's Ein' feste Burg. Works
