England Occupations Composer Conductor Sir Arthur Edward Drummond Bliss CH KCVO (2 August 1891 – 27 March 1975) was a British composer.
edit Birth, education and WWI
Born to an American father and English mother, Bliss attended Bilton Grange Preparatory School and Rugby before entering Cambridge University . He was destined to display characteristics of both nations, his profound romanticism balanced by an unquenchable energy and optimism. He began studies at the Royal College of Music under Charles Villiers Stanford , but First World War broke out shortly after his first term and he left school to serve as a Grenadier Guards officer in the field.
edit Becomes a composer
With the return of peace, Bliss’s career took off rapidly as a composer of what were, for British audiences, startlingly new pieces, often for unusual ensembles. Sir Arthur Bliss, Master of the Queen's Music in Great Britain from 1953 until his death, eventually followed the late romantic tradition of Elgar in English music, after a more controversial period of composition in youth. In accordance with the perceived duties of his official position, he wrote various ceremonial pieces, in addition to music for the concert-hall, theatre and cinema. Film Music Familiar music by Bliss includes excerpts from his film-score for H.G. Wells's Things to Come, and the patriotic march Welcome the Queen, also written for a film. Ballets The ballets Checkmate, an allegorical game of chess, with choreography by Ninette de Valois and Miracle in the Gorbals, a morality play set in the slums of Glasgow with choreography by Robert Helpman, made a strong impression on ballet audiences.
