Boccherini: The Guitar Quintets - Pepe Romero (1994)

Boccherini's Quintets for Guitar and Strings do not highlight the guitar as solo instrument in the way that better-known Baroque concerti frame and focus upon their respective solo instruments. Rather, the instrument insinuates itself into a company of strings and plays along with them, sometimes providing a steady background and occasionally emerging as a conventional soloist. Download

    LUIGI BOCCHERINI
The reputation of Boccherini rivalled that of Haydn, if the nick- name "the wife of Haydn" may be accepted as evidence of contemporary fame. He was a virtuoso cellist and worked first in his native Lucca and then in Vienna, before moving to Paris and thence to Spain, where he seems to have remained from 1768 until his death. There he was in the service of the Infante Don Luis and various other patrons, and was appointed court composer to King Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia, himself a cellist, although there is no evidence of his actual presence at Potsdam. He died in apparent poverty in 1805. Chamber Music Boccherini is popularly known as the composer of the famous Minuet, taken from one of his quintets, written for a string quartet with an additional cello. The set of Quintets for string quartet and guitar includes a thoroughly Spanish Fandango. Early life.
Luigi Rodolfo was the third child of a double-bass player, Leopoldo Boccherini, and Maria Santa Prosperi. At an early age he was put under the care of the musical director of the local cathedral. When he reached the age of 13, he was sent to Rome to study with the renowned cellist Giovanni Battista Costanzi, musical director at St. Peter's Basilica. In Rome Boccherini was influenced by the polyphonic tradition ( i.e., music with two or more interweaving melodic parts) stemming from the works of Giovanni da Palestrina and from the instrumental music of Arcangelo Corelli. In 1757 Boccherini and his father were invited to play in the Imperial Theatre orchestra in Vienna. On his second journey to Vienna (1760), Boccherini, at 17, made his debut as a composer with his

    Luigi Boccherini
The sense of lyricism and of proportion in the works of the Italian composer, Luigi Boccherini is often amazing, as was his creativity and productivity. Though he was born in Lucca to a musical family, by the time he was 14 he travelled to Vienna to play in an orchestra there, and it was there that he first encountered the music of Franz Joseph Haydn , who was Boccherini's senior by nearly 19 years. He returned often to play in Italy, but by the age 25 his fame was growing and was invited to Paris to appear as a cello soloist at a Concert Spirituel . He was hailed as a great virtuoso, and his works were extremely popular and widely published. The next year he received an invitiation to become chamber composer to the court of the Infante Luis in Madrid. Boccherini stayed until 1786, the year the Infante died, and subsequently took a position with Freidrich Wilhelm II of Prussia. But by 1797 he was back in Madrid and three years later Boccherini secured the patronage of Napoleon's brother, Lucien Bonaparte, then the French ambassador to Madrid. He held this position until he died.
