edit Biography
Born under the Ancien Régime in Rouen Adrien Boieldieu received his musical education first from the choirmaster and then from the organist of the local cathedral . During the Reign of Terror , Rouen was one of the few towns to maintain a significant musical life and in 1793 a series of concerts was organised featuring the celebrated violinist Pierre Rode and the tenor Pierre-Jean Garat. It was during this time that Boieldieu composed his earliest works to texts written by his father ( La fille coupable in 1793, followed by Rosalie et Mirza in 1795). They brought him immediate success.

Annotation: The Calif Of Bagdad Overture is one of Boieldieu's most popular works. The introduction has the melodic charm of Mozart. The Allegro responds to the accepted form, beginning softly and brightly in crisp rhythm which gives way to vigorous passages that alternate with lovely, reposeful melodies. The ending is decisive and brilliant. MCB Home Concerts Library What's New ... Site Search 2002-2010, Marshall's Civic Band, Inc.

Le Calife de Bagdad (1800) and Ma Tante Aurore (1803). From 1804 to 1810 he directed the opera at St. Petersburg, Russia. In 1816 he became director of music to Louis XVIII, in 1817 a member of the French Institute, and in 1820 professor of composition at the conservatory. His main operas of this period were Jean de Paris Le Petit Chaperon rouge (1818; "Little Red Riding Hood"), and his masterpiece, La Dame blanche The Lady of the Lake Monastery , and Guy Mannering , it had received 1,700 performances by 1914. Boieldieu's work illustrates the evolution of French operatic music in the generation following the French Revolution. In its lighter aspects, his style was compared to Rossini's. His scenes of mystery and romance, particularly in La Dame blanche , are akin to those of Carl Maria von Weber. He also composed numerous romances for voice and harp or piano and a harp concerto.
