The Man Who Would be King
An Interview with Pierre Boulez
by Andy Carvin As Paris repaired itself from four horrific years of Nazi occupation, the great Russian neoclassical composer Igor Stravinsky returned to the city which he had called home before the war. Thousands of Frenchmen and women gathered at the Theatre Champs-Elysees that winter to hear the premiere of Stravinsky's Danses Concertantes and Four Norwegian Moods , pieces he had written during his exile in America. But to Stravinsky's surprise, as he walked toward the conductor's podium, instead of being greeted by the cheers of endearing fans, he was pummeled with a fit of prolonged shouts and jeers. In the audience a small group of students from the Paris Conservatoire, France's leading music academy, booed the aging Russian considered by many as the greatest composer of his time. But the young men did not boo him because he was Stravinsky - they were actually fans of his work. They booed him because the music establishment, mesmerized by his neoclassical revival, had all but deified Stravinsky, deeming his school of thought as the only school of merit. So in order to bring attention to their own avant-garde composing methods, these bold students hissed and raved in the face of the man that was both their musical hero and intellectual nemesis. And leading the fracas was a wild-eyed country boy named Boulez. Today, some 50 years later, Pierre Boulez has established himself as one of the most influencial composers and conductors of this century. Even Stravinsky, his old rival, eventually adopted Boulez's techniques while anointing the younger man as "the greatest composer of his generation." At 68, Maestro Boulez is busier than ever - he is president and conductor of Ensemble Intercontemporain, Europe's premiere modern music ensemble, as well as the principle guest conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. And in between conducting appearances, he continues to write music.

in conversation with joshua cody Few would have imagined upon hearing the premiere of Pierre Boulez's 1956 work
Foucault. "You see, there is a very strong parallelism between [our] two trajectories." Well, each generation has to solve its problems. I cannot solve the problems of a generation which is forty years younger than me, certainly not. I say always, every period is difficult. There is no easy period. You know, when you think of the fifties, you might think it was very easy, whereas it was not easy at all. There was always the question of whether this new discipline was not completely absurd; there were many questions. Certainly, when I look, for instance, only at Paris, I see that practically all the composers of my generation have disappeared. They made the wrong choices, or they were not courageous enough, or they were not lucid enough; there are many reasons. Or, perhaps they were politically involved, and that political involvement brought them to solutions which were very trivial; this type of thing. So, no, it was not easy! No period is really easy.

PIERRE BOULEZ
Paris during this time was under German occupation. Developing a strongly iconoclastic stance, Boulez welcomed German culture, ridiculed the political leadership of France, allied himself with the Communist party, rejected Catholicism, and made fun of the contemporary musical heroes. At the Conservatoire he was a member of Messiaen Arthur Honegger . Respected and encouraged by Messiaen, Boulez took the view that composition should be conducted along scientific and strictly logical lines, and abandoned the idea of personal aesthetic expression. In 1945 he took first prize in harmony at the Conservatoire. During the same year Boulez heard Schoenberg Milhaud Poulenc and Honegger In 1954 the company launched a small but distinguished series of concerts of which Boulez was the director. The following year these became known as the Domaine Musical concerts. They quickly established an international reputation for the performance of contemporary music, and were soon extensively recorded. Boulez maintained the musical directorship of the series until 1964. In 1955 he produced an undoubted masterpiece, , which combined originality of form, rhythm and instrumentation, with direct musical expression. During this period Boulez (as a composer) was to go through a repeated pattern of violently breaking with those with whom he had previously developed close relationships. This happened firstly with

How does one account for the fall of Pierre Boulez the composer and the rise of Pierre Boulez the conductor?
by David Schiff

T HIRTY-FIVE years ago I bought a record that changed the way I thought about music: Pierre Boulez's , conducted by Robert Craft. Scored for the exotic ensemble of contralto voice, alto flute, viola, guitar, and percussion (including vibraphone, but prominently bongos), Le Marteau was remotely jazzy and vaguely oriental, rhythmically frantic yet emotionally cool. It was atonal, but without the angst of most of the atonal music I knew. Heard today, it might seem quintessentially fiftiesa vodka martini set to music, with instrumentation not far from what you would hear on a Chet Baker record or, with those bongos, a hi-fi demo. But at the time, I felt that I had been granted a vision of the musical future. I sat down and wrote a piece for flute, vibraphone, and bongos, to be played as fast as possible. My revelation was not unique. Le Marteau affected composers of several generations, who began to turn out flute-and-vibraphone music by the yard. Because the recording was conducted by Craft, it signaled a laying on of hands by Igor Stravinsky, who lavished praise on

On the recommendation of Honegger he was made musical director of the new Compagnie Renaud-Barrault in 1946. In 1954 he founded the Domaine Musicale series of concerts; in 1955 he was a lecturer at Darmstadt and in 1963 lectured at Harvard University and gave courses for conductor at Basle. In 1967 he became guest conductor for the Cleveland Orchestra, and in 1971 he became musical director of the BBC Symphony and the New York Philharmonic orchestras, relinquishing the former post in 1974 and the latter in 1978. In 1974 he took up the direction of the Institut de Recherche et de Coordination Acoustique/Musique in Paris, in which post he has been able to expand himself as one of the great experimenters with serial techniques and with electronics.
