William Boyce
William Boyce (September 11, 1711 - February 7, 1779) was an composer and organist widely regarded as one of the most important English-born composers of the 18 th century. He is best known for his set of eight symphonies (1737-56, published as Op. 2), his anthems and his celebratory odes. Born in London, Boyce began his musical career as a choirboy at St. Paul's Cathedral and eventually attained the positions of Master of the King's Musick in 1755 and organist at the Chapel Royal in 1758. Like Beethoven , Boyce suffered from increasing deafness in his later years. When he was no longer able to continue in his duties as organist, he turned his energies to completing a compilation of English Cathedral Music begun by his mentor, Maurice Greene. Boyce's edition includes works by William Byrd and Henry Purcell , among others, and many are still used in Anglican services.

18TH CENTURY ENGLISH MUSIC Home Page Links Email William Boyce (1711-1779) Early Years
William Boyce was born in 1711 in Maiden Lane (now Skinners' Lane) in the City of London. His exact date of birth is unknown but we do know that he was baptised on 11th September, 1711 at the church opposite his home: St. James' Garlickhythe. As three, ten and eight days separate the respective births and baptisms of his brother and sisters, it is reasonable to assume that William Boyce was born at the beginning of September 1711. The church of St. James still stands today; just north-west of Southwark Bridge. It is sometimes referred to as 'Wren's Lantern' on account of its shape and the amount of light admitted through its large number of windows. William was the son John Boyce, a cabinet maker, and his wife Elizabeth. They had moved to Maiden Lane in the first half of 1711 shortly before William's birth. The exact location of their home in Maiden Lane (Skinners' Lane) can be identified as on the north side just east of Doby Court. William was the last to be born of their four children. In February 1722 William Boyce's father was appointed Beadle to the Joiners' Company. The post carried with it accommodation for the Beadle's family in the Joiners' Hall. When the Boyces moved in to the Hall in May 1723, William was 11, his older sisters Joanne and Elizabeth were 19 and 13 respectively and his brother John nearly 17.

WILLIAM BOYCE
William Boyce is among the most important English composers of the late Baroque period, 25 years younger than Handel, whom he outlived by twenty years. He was a rival of Arne and in 1757 became Master of the King's Music. His works include a variety of music for both church and theatre. Instrumental Music Boyce's instrumental music includes a set of Eight Symphonies in eight parts, published in 1760, compositions that reflect the changing tastes of the time. His set of Twelve Trio Sonatas followed a fashion that had started with Corelli in the previous century and was now coming to an end. Vocal and Choral Music One of Boyce's best known songs is the patriotic Heart of Oak. His church music still retains a place in Anglican cathedral repertoire, strengthened by the appearance of his collected Cathedral Music. Lone Scout: W. D. Boyce and American Boy Scouting
is the biography of a Progressive-era Chicago businessman and world- wide explorer. Paralleling Theodore Roosevelt in many activities, during his lifetime Boyce (1858-1929) attained international prominence -"a man with friends in almost every civilized country." His sustaining legacy, also a reflection of Roosevelt's interests and concern for children, was bringing the concept of Boy Scouting to the United States and combining it with youth programs established by the YMCA and other organizations. This is the first authoritative biography of William D. Boyce, founder in 1910 of the Boy Scouts of America.
Born to a Pennsylvania farm family, Boyce's monetary successes were as a Chicago newspaper publisher. Between 1887 and the early 1930s, his periodicals were read by millions of subscribers in rural and small-town America.
A lifelong adventurer, Boyce made extensive trips to all parts of the world. During World War One, he traveled to Europe on the British luxury liner
