Average Customer Rating: No Rating English composer Frank Bridge's music has been sadly underrated. A student of Charles Villiers Stanford, he in turn became the teacher of Benjamin Britten. His style is difficult to characterize: his early works are Romantic in sound and scope, while the later ones are more dissonant and structured. The Two Pieces for Cello and Piano found here are drawn from his H. 104, which is a collection of four small pieces for either violin or cello composed in about 1912. Included in this setting are the "Meditation" and "Spring Song" from that work.
This edition for cello and piano is published by Masters Music Publications.

FRANK BRIDGE
The work of the English composer and viola-player Frank Bridge is now beginning to enjoy some favour, not least through the fact that he was the teacher of Benjamin Britten, one of whose earlier works is based on a composition by Bridge. Orchestral Music Bridge's orchestral works bring useful additions to the string orchestra repertoire. These include his Lament of 1915, an earlier Suite and a Christmas dance, Sir Roger de Coverley, and versions of Sally in Our Alley and Cherry Ripe, originally designed for string quartet. Bridge, Frank
(b. Feb. 26, 1879, Brighton, Sussex, Eng.d. Jan. 10, 1941, Eastbourne, Sussex), English composer, viola player, and conductor, one of the most accomplished musicians of his day, known especially for his chamber music and songs. Bridge studied violin at the Royal College of Music, London, but changed to viola, becoming a virtuoso player. After a period in the Joachim Quartet (1906) he played with the English String Quartet until 1915. He also held various positions as a conductor, both symphonic and operatic. Although he composed in many genres, he was particularly successful in his smaller forms, such as the Phantasie Quartet for piano and strings (1910), four string quartets, and songs and piano pieces. His early works were Romantic in style; later, while he never abandoned Romanticism, he moved toward atonality. He was widely respected as a teacher, and his pupils included Benjamin Britten. Bridge: Frank Stewart's New Book Gives Tips on Dummy Play
By ALAN TRUSCOTT Published: August 25, 1986 For those who wish to sharpen their dummy play a new book in quiz format will be a most desirable purchase. It is ''Frank Stewart's Contract Bridge Quiz Book,'' available for $10.95 from The Bridge World, 39 West 94th Street, New York, N.Y. 10025. The contents, rather more restricted than the title suggests, focus on the problems of the declarer. In each of 27 areas the reader is given some general guidance and at least eight single-dummy situations to address. The explanations are lucid and the analysis sound, although in a few cases the solution is not clear-cut. An example is the diagramed deal from the section on avoidance. East-West Hands Hidden The reader is asked to play the diagramed North-South hands in three clubs with the East-West hands hidden. West has opened one spade and been raised to two spades. West leads the spade king and shifts to the diamond ten. In the interests of preventing East from gaining the lead to play hearts, Stewart suggests that the declarer should refuse to play an honor from the dummy, allowing West to win. This works perfectly with the cards as shown, for after a diamond continuation South can arrange to end-play West.
