Britten, Benjamin (1913-1976) page: Benjamin Britten was the most prominent and highly honored British composer of the twentieth century, perhaps the most acclaimed of his countrymen in classical music since Henry Purcell in the seventeenth century. Such recognition is not, however, without considerable irony; many of Britten's greatest works were inspired by his long-time personal and professional relationship with his lover, tenor Peter Pears, and created within the context of a society in which homosexual acts were criminal. Edward Benjamin Britten (later Baron Britten of Aldeburgh) was born November 22, 1913, in Lowestoft, Suffolk. Although his boyhood was by all accounts ordinary, he showed a prodigious aptitude for music and began playing the piano and composing pieces while still a small child.

BENJAMIN BRITTEN
Benjamin Britten was born into a middle-class family living in the small port of Lowestoft in East Anglia, a region of England to which Britten remained attached throughout his life. His father was a dentist but his mother was a keen amateur singer who encouraged him to learn both the viola and the piano with local teachers and to compose. By the age of fourteen he had written over one hundred youthful pieces of music: some of these were to form the basis of his early Simple Symphony . He met the composer Frank Bridge in 1927 at a concert that Bridge was conducting, and showed him some of his compositions; as a result Bridge agreed to take him on as a private pupil. Bridge gave Britten a firm technical foundation and introduced him to the music of many contemporary foreign composers. John Ireland and piano with Arthur Benjamin , winning several prizes for his compositions. He completed his studies at the Royal College in 1933. During the following year his father died, and, at a rehearsal for his choral work

Britten, Benjamin,
in full EDWARD BENJAMIN BRITTEN, BARON BRITTEN OF ALDEBURGH (b . Nov. 22, 1913, Lowestoft, Suffolk, Eng.d. Dec. 4, 1976, Aldeburgh, Suffolk), leading British composer of the mid-20th century, whose operas are considered the finest English operas since those of Henry Purcell in the 17th century. He was also an outstanding pianist and conductor. Britten composed as a child and at the age of 12 began several years of study under the composer and teacher Frank Bridge. He later studied under John Ireland and Arthur Benjamin at the Royal College of Music in London and, while there, composed the set of choral variations A Boy Was Born (1933; revised, 1958). He then worked as a composer for the radio, theatre, and cinema, coming into close contact with the poet W.H. Auden . In 1937 his Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge, for string orchestra, won him international acclaim. From 1939 to 1942 he was in the United States, where his first work for the stage, the operetta Paul Bunyan (1941; libretto by Auden), was performed. A commission by the Koussevitzky Foundation led to the composition of his opera
