Further information: Profile Gallery Performances News ... Sample Pages Profile "... The music of Gavin Bryars falls under no category. It is mongrel, full of sensuality and wit and is deeply moving. He is one of the few composers who can put slapstick and primal emotion alongside each other. He allows you to witness new wonders in the sounds around you by approaching them from a completely new angle. With a third ear maybe. . ." Michael Ondaatj Gavin Bryars studied philosophy at Sheffield University and became a professional jazz bassist and a pioneer of free improvisation working especially with Derek Bailey and Tony Oxley. In the late 1960s he worked with John Cage and this influenced early works such as the indeterminately scored The Sinking of the Titanic of 1969 and the classic Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet of 1971.

Strongly attracted to percussion instruments, the 53-year-old contemporary of Cornelius Cardew and rocker Brian Eno swapped the violins in an orchestra for a marimba and sound bells. klassik net : Point Music is the new music label of Philips Classics, which commissioned you to write the cello concerto for Julian Lloyd Webber. Did the record company give you any directives about the concerto's composition? Bryars : No, they didn't tell me what key to write it in. They indicated a duration of around 25 - 30 minutes. In the end I came out with 35, which wasn't a problem. Philips did stipulate that Julian and I had to iron out our relationship. I had to could come up with something we would both be happy with. klassik net : Couldn't this be restrictive though, a commission from a recording company whose objective is essentially to sell records?
