Dietrich Buxtehude
Dietrich Buxtehude (c. 1637 - May 9, 1707) was a Danish organist and composer of church, chamber and organ music, and, along with , possibly the most influential composer of his time. His early youth and birthplace remain a mystery. Most scholars recognize that he studied music with his father. Being the organist at Helsingbor (c.1638-41) and at Helsingor (c. 1642-71) his father was most likely qualified to teach and have a great influence on him. Buxtehude moved to Lubeck in 1688 and became organist of St. Mary's Church. In Lubeck he rose to such fame that musicians from northern Germany came to the city to meet the composer and attend his concerts. He was visited by George Frideric Handel in 1703 and by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1705. According to legend Bach, walked more than 200 miles to meet him. Bach did study with Buxtehude for several months in 1705 and 1706. Both composers wanted to follow Buxtehude at St. Mary's, but neither one wanted to marry his daughter as that was a condition for the position.

(b church music, one of the most esteemed and influential composers of his time. His exact place of birth is uncertain, and nothing is known of his early youth. It is usually assumed that he began his musical education with his father, who was organist at Helsingbor ( c. 1638-41) and at Helsingor (Elsinor; c. Buxtehude's duties as church organist included composing works for public festivals and for the marriages and funerals of the great merchant families of the city. He left a considerable amount of vocal and instrumental music, much of which was not recovered until the 20th century; much more certainly remains lost. His instrumental music is simple and pleasing; though well constructed, it seldom aims at technical virtuosities. His most important and influential works are considered to be those for organ, which include toccatas, preludes, fugues, chaconnes, pieces based on chorales, and a passacaglia to which J.S. Bach's Passacaglia in C Minor is indebted. The preludes are usually brief, and, with one exception, they are unlike Bach's in having no thematic connection with the fugues that follow them. Most of the harpsichord music has been lost.

Dietrich Buxtehude: 1637-1707
Successor to Franz Tunder at Lübeck's Church of Mary in 1668, Buxtehude began the tradition of Abendmusiken five years later. The annual concert series began the fifth Sunday before Christmas and featured sacred works for organ, choir and orchestra (a lasting tradition in that church for 137 years). In 1705 Bach walked 250 miles from Arnstadt to attend the Abendmusiken and overstayed his leave by three months. Buxtehude was known in his lifetime chiefly as an organ virtuoso and teacher whose students included Bruhns . In a letter to Forkel Carl Philipp Emanuel identified Buxtehude as a composer whose works his father much admired.
