Biographical Notes
Cornelius was the second of three sons born to Michael and Mariel Cardew. His father was a pioneer potter, his mother an artist. The family moved to Cornwall a few years after his birth and it was from here that he was accepted as a pupil by the Canterbury Cathedral School which had evacuated to the area during the war because of the bombing. Cornelius began musical life as a chorister.
From 1953-57 he studied piano and 'cello with Percy Waller and composition with Howard Ferguson at the RAM and won a scholarship to study electronic music in Cologne for a year before becoming Karlheinz Stockhausen's assistant (1958-60), collaborating with him on Carre.
" As a musician he was outstanding because he was not only a good pianist but also a good improviser and I hired him to become my assistant in the late 50s and he worked with me for over three years. I gave him work to do which I have never given to any other musician, which means to work with me on the score I was composing. He was one of the best examples that you can find among musicians because he was well informed about the latest theories of composition as well as being a performer ".

12. Cornelius Cardew: Treatise (excerpt) Morton Feldman: Why Patterns
Concert review.

Concert Review Cornelius Cardew : Treatise (excerpt) Morton Feldman : Why Patterns Music Projects/London (Richard Bernas) BMIC at The Warehouse. Thursday 11 November 1999 Part of the attraction of the BMIC's ongoing series at The Warehouse is the opportunity it affords to catch up with groups whose profile or repertoire finds too few outlets in the UK these days. So it is with Music Projects/London , a close-knit group of freelancers, which has done much to promote the more progressive side of European music over the last two decades. There are few more impressive-looking conceptions than Cornelius Cardew's Treatise (1963-7), a 236-page graphic score of exquisite intricacy. Questions of what to play and how to play it are left to the performer(s)' discretion; though, as here, a degree of pre-performance planning helps reinforce the very definite continuity in texture and dynamics that the individual pages suggest. MP/L realised the first 30 pages at a Maida Vale recital last May: the next 30 pages followed this evening, in an often intense rendering for flute, clarinet, trombone, viola, double bass and the wonderfully 'period' sound of a Hammond B2 organ; its venerable nature skilfully administered to by Bernas himself. The result was 37 minutes of concentrated music making - free form but never directionless, and a great demonstration of thinking and reacting in a 'real-time' performance situation. If Treatise is about means

Artist: CARDEW, CORNELIUS Title: Piano Music 1957-1970 Label: MATCHLESS RECORDINGS (UK) Format: CD Price: Catalog #: Studio recordings from 1996 of solo piano music by the late composer (and key figure in the early days of AMM), Cardew, as performed by AMM's John Tilbury. "All the music included in this recording belongs to Cardew's early period of radical exploration and experimentation in the late 1950s and 60s, when having fully assimilated the advanced language of the European avant-garde, he went on to develop new techniques and new aspects of indeterminacy, to use notation in increasingly flexible and open-ended ways and to encourage the creative involvement of performers in the realisation of his musical ideas."

Born in Winchcombe, Gloucestershire, his family moved to Wenford Bridge Pottery Cornwall a few years after his birth where he was later accepted as a pupil by the Canterbury Cathedral School which had evacuated to the area during the war due to bombing. His musical career thus began as a chorister.
Concerts in Cologne by John Cage and David Tudor had a considerable influence on him, leading him to abandon post-Schönbergian serial composition and develop the indeterminate and experimental scores for which he is best known. [Original authorial note:] This article is a revised version of the text of 'Cornelius Cardew - a Memorial Lecture', delivered at the Goldsmiths' College School of Adult and Social Studies, in association with the Music Department of the college, on 26 April 1982. [2] How did Cardew's preoccupation with the American avant garde come about? This is an important question in the light of the subsequent influence of North American culture on Europe, especially in the sixties: Cage, Buckminster Fuller, and the abstract expressionist painters, in particular Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns (to whom Cardew dedicated his Octet '61 Structures , besides being a considerable technical and musical feat, was probably tantamount to an act of rebellion in the climate that prevailed there. [3] Under the circumstances Cardew's decision to continue his studies and, as it turned out, to work with Stockhausen in Cologne was not surprising, though the consequences were not without a certain irony. The conditions he found in Germany in 1957 were as oppressive as anything he had left behind - though in a different way: total serialism had achieved the status of a religion whose followers defended and counter-attacked with all the fanaticism and intolerance of true believers. It needed the intrusion of John Cage into those closed European musical circles to alleviate a situation that had become intolerable. Even Boulez, hardly an innocent party in the proceedings, commented: 'In Darmstadt between 1952 and 1958 the discipline of serialization was so severe it was ridiculous. Cage represented a liberation from this.'
