Charpentier was born in or near Paris , the son of a master scribe who had very good connections to influential families in the Parlement of Paris . Marc-Antoine received a very good education, perhaps with the help of the Jesuits, and registered for law school in Paris when he was eighteen. He withdrew after one semester. He spent "two or three years" in Rome , probably between 1667 and 1669, and studied with Giacomo Carissimi . He is also known to have been in contact with poet-musician Charles Coypeau d'Assoucy , who was composing for the French Embassy in Rome. A legend claims that Charpentier initially traveled to Rome to study painting before he was discovered by Carissimi. This story is undocumented and possibly untrue. (At any rate, although his 28 volumes of autograph manuscripts reveal considerable skill at tracing the arabesques used by professional scribes, they contain not a single drawing, not even a rudimentary sketch.) Regardless, he acquired a solid knowledge of contemporary Italian musical practice and brought it back to France.

Assorted Music in Critical Editions
Of seventeenth-century French composers, Marc-Antoine Charpentier stands out for the impressive legacy he left to future generations of musicians. He was renowned in his day, and Charpentier's music continues to intrigue audiences and performers with its freshness and daring. The diversity that Charpentier himself held to be essential to excellent music is at the core of his own works. A-R's series of Recent Researches in Music of the Baroque Era includes editions of almost every kind of music that Charpentier composed. This prolific composer wrote sacred music, various pieces for the theater, and chamber music. A-R's catalog includes music in each of these genres edited by noted scholars. H. Wiley Hitchcock edited the first publication of the 1702 oratorio Judicium Salominis B 1 ). It contains an introduction on the context and music of this relatively late composition, along with an English translation of the full text. This oratorio, or historiae

Charpentier , Marc Antoine
French composer who studied in Italy. After his return to France he became the most outstanding French composer of oratorios. In 1672 Charpentier was engaged by Moliere's theatre company to write music for the play "Le Mariage force". In the 1680s he was appointed Master of Music at the church of St. Louis in Paris. Almost all of what remains of Charpentier's religious music comes from this period. It includes not only his famous "Te Deum", but also the beautiful "Christmas Midnight Mass" and the "Assumpta est Maria Mass". For nearly three centuries, Charpentier was all but forgotten in favour of his contemporary, Jean-Baptiste Lully. But many believe Charpentier to be the greater of the two, displaying in his work impressive breadth of range - from the pomp of the court to the intimacy of the private chapel. www link :
