Welcome to the Vancouver Chopin Society
2010 marks the bicentennial of the birth of Frederic Chopin, as well as Robert Schumann, one of Chopin’s admirers and friends. In May, the Vancouver Chopin Society celebrated this occasion by hosting a three-day festival showcasing Chopin’s piano works, chamber works and vocal compositions, together with a lecture by one of the world’s foremost Chopin scholars from Warsaw, Poland and a dialogue depicting Chopin’s relationship with Georges Sand. Thanks to all of you, our subscribers, members and audience, the festival was a remarkable success.

Frederic Chopin Biography
Frederic Chopin is the best piano composer of all time, even to this date. His music has inspired pianists all over the world. The music of Frederic Chopin is not only original, but has the most emotional impact for piano music. He took advantage of the piano in every way possible, trying not to be too ridiculous, as some composers are today, but trying not to be too conservative. Frederic Chopin was creative in a way that still makes his music far superior than all piano composers of this time. Proof that the music of Frederic Chopin is highly valued is that the average person probably would have heard of one or two of his piano compositions, even if they never listen to piano music. If Fredric Chopin had concentrated on symphonies, he would write better symphonies than Beethoven. But he did not concentrate on symphony writing, which is the reason why Frederic Chopin wrote poor for anything else but the piano. The only reason Frederic Chopin concentrated on the piano was probably because he could not write music in his head. He was extremely creative but needed an aid, and the aid being the piano. Another reason why he concentrated on the piano was probably because he realized that the piano has many more possibilities than an orchestra. Frederic Chopin was a true hero to the piano, and gave the piano justice. Before his time, the piano only created boring piano music tunes. After Frederic Chopin, it was realized that the piano had capabilities of playing music that can be more musical than an orchestra.

His father, of French origin, born at Nancy in 1770, had married a Polish lady, Justine Krzyzanowska. Frederic was their third child. His first musical education he received from Adalbert Ziwny, a Czech musician, who is said to have been a passionate admirer of Johann Sebastian Bach . He also received a good general education at one of the first colleges of Warsaw, where he was supported by Prince Antoine Radziwill, a generous protector of artistic talent and himself well known as the composer of music to Goethe 's Faust and other works. His musical genius opened to Chopin the best circles of Polish society, at that time unrivaled in Europe for its ease of intercourse, the beauty and grace of its women, and its liberal appreciation of artistic gifts. These early impressions were of lasting influence on Chopin's development. While at college he received thorough instruction in the theory of his art from Joseph Elsner, a learned musician and director of the conservatoire at Warsaw. When in 1829 he left his native town for Vienna, where his debut as a pianist took place, he was in all respects a perfectly formed and developed artist. There is in his compositions little of that gradual progress which, for instance, in

"He was able to plunge his audience into profound bliss or into an abyss of sadness, as his music gripped one's soul . . . and then, to remove that impression and that memory of suffering from the others as well as from himself, he would turn surreptitiously to a mirror, arrange his hair and his cravat and instantly become a phlegmatic Englishman, or a sentimental, ridiculous lady, or an impertinent old beggar . . . Frédéric François Chopin
Home Library Miscellaneous Britannica Concise Encyclopedia (click to enlarge) Frédéric Chopin, detail of a portrait by Eugène Delacroix; in the Louvre in … (credit: Giraudon/Art Resource, New York) (born March 1, 1810, Z George Sand ; she left him in 1847, and a rapid decline led to his death two years later. Chopin stands not only as Poland's greatest composer but perhaps as the most significant composer in the history of the piano; he exhaustively exploited the instrument's capacities for charm, excitement, variety, and timbral beauty. His innovations in fingering, his use of the pedals, and his general treatment of the keyboard were hightly influential. Apart from two piano concertos (both 1830) and four other works for piano and orchestra, virtually all his compositions are for solo piano; they include some 60 mazurkas, 27 études, 26 preludes, 21 nocturnes, some 20 waltzes, 16 polonaises, 4 ballades, 4 scherzos, and 3 sonatas.
