Welcome to
The
Chopin Society
of Houston
Our mission is
to provide public
opportunities for
young artists to
come together
to express
without words
what they have in their hearts as it relates to Chopin’s music The Chopin Society of Houston was established at the beginning of the year 2000, after a very successful Chopin Youth Competition in 1999 , organized to honor the 150th anniversary of Chopin’s death. As UNESCO proclaimed 1999 year of Chopin, Houston’s piano teachers filled their studios with the unsurpassed beauty of Chopin’s music, teaching and preparing their students for the anniversary performance. Our organizing committee , consisting of musicians and music lovers, decided that our work can not end with that success, but should continue as long as there is need for Chopin’s music in the Houston community and the means to support such an idea. As many pianists and authorities agree, Chopin’s music is the best and the most beautiful music written for the piano. We here in Texas, at the Chopin Society of Houston, share this opinion enthusiastically and organize our

HOME NEWS POLKA NEWS BLOG ... CHRISTMAS Frédéric Chopin
Frédéric Chopin, the greatest of the Polish composers, was born in Zelazowa Wola, near Warsaw on February 22, 1810 of a French father, and a Polish mother. He spent the first 20 years of his life in Warsaw, where he was able to hear many of the premier artists of the time perform. Chopin first studied piano at the Warsaw Conservatory, and became very proficient on the instrument by the time he reached his early teens. He played his first concert at the age of 7, and was a published composer by the time he turned 15. By the late 1820s, Chopin had won a great reputation as a piano virtuoso and composer. He toured throughout Europe to the acclaim of audiences and critics, alike. In 1831, after performing in Paris, he fell so deeply in love with the city that he made it his home, and never again returned to Warsaw. He soon became a favorite of the Parisian salons, and the society elite, and throughout the years that he lived in Paris, was always in great demand as both a pianist and a teacher. In the late 1830s, Chopin met the novelist, Mme. Aurore Dudévant, who used the pen name

, composer for the piano, b. near Warsaw, of French and Polish parentage. His lyrical, often melancholy, compositions brought romantic piano music to unprecedented expressive heights. A prodigy as a pianist and composer, he began performing at aristocratic salons in Warsaw, and in 1826 he started full-time studies at the Warsaw Conservatory. After concert appearances in Vienna and Munich, he settled in Paris, where he gave his first concert in 1831. Although he remained devoted to Polish culture and artists, he never returned to his homeland. In Paris he became closely associated with the principal composers, artists, and literary figures of his time. He was a virtuoso interpreter of his own works, but his dislike of playing in public made him prefer teaching and composing to the concert stage. In 1836, Liszt introduced Chopin to Mme Dudevant, better known by her pen name George

McMaster Music Analysis Colloqium LISTENING FOR MOTIVIC-STRUCTURAL UNITY IN CHOPIN'S NOCTURNE , Op. 37 No. 1 Barbara Swanson
Nocturne motivic -structural unity of the piece when approached in a Schenkerian manner. Because of this dual interest, the question that I would like to return to periodically within this essay is to what extent, or, in what way motivic -structural unity can be heard in this nocturne. In his book Free Composition Heinrich Schenker describes a common three-part song form in which structural unity is achieved through the use of a neighbour -tone figure. Using the example of Chopin's Ballade in g minor op. 23, he illustrates how scale degree 5^ (d), prolonged throughout the A sections, is neighboured by a prolonged scale degree 6^ (e-flat) in the B section. Schenker's graph of the Ballade's structure provides a useful model for considering levels of structure in Chopin's Nocturne. Also in g minor, the Nocturne begins on a two-beat tied d (5^); the B section modulates to E-flat and melodically centres around the e-flat tonic (scale degree 6^). The
