Black Mahler dramatically brings to life the true story of all but forgotten, English composer, Samuel Coleridge- Taylor (1875- 1912). Born to a white mother and black father and raised in the London suburb of Croydon, Coleridge- Taylor’s epic choral trilogy, ‘The Song of Hiawatha’ makes this funny, generous and modest young man a worldwide sensation overnight. Although hailed a cultural hero by African Americans, Coleridge struggles against financial ruin, personal tragedy and seismic obstacles throughout his short life.
This moving story will haunt the memory long after the final page is turned. Norman Lebrecht (cultural commentator, award- winning novelist, Assistant Editor of the London Evening Standard and presenter of Lebrecht Live on BBC Radio 3) said, “It’s an incredibly human story which, in my view, would translate extremely well to film.”
Highly acclaimed international opera director David McVicar said, “Charles Elford has written a lucid and touching account of Coleridge- Taylor's life. A book that deals as much with the social history of Edwardian Britain as it does with music and the art of this unjustly neglected Composer"

Biography
British composer, the son of an English white mother and African black father. He showed exceptional talent as a 5-year-old child playing his violin and singing in the choir. His father, apparently because of racial prejudice, had difficulty becoming a physician, and, when Samuel was a boy, his father deserted him and his mother to return to his native West Africa. In college, Samuel studied music and composition. In 1896 he became conductor of an amateur orchestra in Croydon and began teaching, conducting, and performing recitals and at music festivals. He continued to compose, and in 1898, presented "Ballade in A Minor" at the Gloucester Festival to positive reviews. His best known piece was the Longfellow trilogy for solo voices, chorus and orchestra, with the first in the series being "Hiawatha's Wedding Feast" in 1898, the second "The Death of Minnehaha (1899) and finally, "Hiawatha's Departure" in 1900. He toured in the United States in 1904, 1906 and 1910 and was well-received. He was married with two children, and he died on September 1, 1912 in Croydon.

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor
Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was born on August 15, 1875 in Holborn, England (a suburb of London). His father, Daniel Hughes Taylor, was a native of Sierra Leone, and his mother was English. Daniel Taylor came to England to study medicine. He was a student at Taunton College, Somerset and later at Kings College in London. His work led him to become a member of the Royal College of Surgeons and to obtain a license from the Royal College of Physicians. His father was not a part of Coleridge-Taylor's life, returning to Sierra Leone either before Samuel's birth or while he was a very young boy. William Tortolano in his book Samuel Coleridge-Taylor; Anglo-Black Composer, 1875-1912 (Metuchen, NJ, Scarecrow, 1977) states: The young doctor became an assistant... The white patients seemed to like the young assistant... Eventually he sought a practice of his own but this became disastrous because of resentment of his color. As an assistant he was received with little reservation, but as an independent doctor he was mistrusted. Dr. Taylor returned to Africa around 1876. As a child Coleridge-Taylor studied violin and sang in the choir of St. George's Church, Croydon. At the age of fifteen he was admitted by Sir George Grove to the Royal College of Music as a violin student. While at the Royal College his interest in composition grew. With the support of Colonel Herbert Walters, one of his first benefactors, and Grove, arrangements were made that Coleridge-Taylor would study composition with Sir Charles Villiers Stanford. While studying with Stanford, Coleridge-Taylor competed for one of the nine open scholarships at the college and was awarded the fellowship in composition (1893). At that time Grove wrote, "Now you are a scholar...you are now before the world..."
