Corelli, Arcangelo (1653-1713) Arcangelo Corelli, born in 1653 in Fusignano, an Italian village between Ravenna and Bologna, was one of the seventeenth century's most widely admired composers and performers. His music has lasting appeal largely due to its refined sense of poise, the balance of all the forces within each composition, and its modern tonality. Some works are regarded as models of perfection, and Corelli himself has been called "a modern Orpheus." Corelli's music is rigidly formal and simple in design, but nevertheless original. It achieves magnificent effects with a surprising economy of means. Corelli used intriguing sequential progressions and descending bass figurations that are typical of operatic laments. He helped achieve a new independent status for chamber works such as the Trio Sonatas that were formerly regarded as merely decorative. Sponsor Message.

Brief biography for the Italian composer and violinist.

ARCANGELO CORELLI
The Italian composer and violinist Arcangelo Corelli exercised a wide influence
on his contemporaries and on the succeeding generation of composers. Born in
Fusignano, Italy, in 1653, a full generation before Bach or Handel, he studied in
Bologna, a distinguished musical centre, then established himself in Rome in the
1670s. By 1679 had entered the service of Queen Christina of Sweden, who had
taken up residence in Rome in 1655, after her abdication the year before, and had
established there an academy of literati that later became the Arcadian Academy.
Thanks to his musical achievements and growing international reputation he
found no trouble in obtaining the support of a succession of influential patrons.
History has remembered him with such titles as "Founder of Modern Violin Technique," the "World's First Great Violinist," and the "Father of the Concerto Grosso." His contributions can be divided three ways, as violinist, composer, and teacher. It was his skill on the new instrument known as the violin and his extensive and very popular concert tours throughout Europe which did most to give that instrument its prominent place in music. It is probably correct to say that Corelli's

Nationality: Italian
Categories: Composers Violinist
1653 - Born on February 17th in Fusignano, Italy. Italian violin-player and composer. He was the creator of concerto grosso.
- The style of execution introduced by Corelli and preserved by his pupils, such as Geminiani, Locatelli, and many others, has been of vital importance for the development of violin-playing, but he employed only a limited portion of his instrument's compass, aa may be seen by his writings, wherein the parts for the violin never proceed above D on the first string, the highest note in the third position; it is even said that he refused to play, as impossible, a passage which extended to A in altissimo in the overture to Handel's Trionfo del Tempo, and took serious offense when the composer played the note in evidence of its practicability.
1681 - He was in the service of the electoral prince of Bavaria.
1685 - Was in Rome, where he led the festival performances of music for Queen Christine of Sweden and was also a favorite of Cardinal Ottoboni.

Arcangelo Corelli 1653-1713
Corelli was appointed violinist at San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome in 1713. In 1685 (the year of Bach's birth) Corelli became director of violins, a position that he held for the next twenty-four years. It is reported that in 1672 Corelli visited Paris but soon left because of Lully's jealousy. After 1699 Corelli worked for the Elector of Bavaria where he taught the young violin virtuoso Pisendel . Writing almost exclusively for the violin or string ensemble (primarily trio sonatas or sonatas for the violin), Corelli's works represent a critical link in the evolution of the baroque concerto grosso and sonata forms. Bach's instrumental style was clearly influenced by them, as was that of Corelli's other students Geminiani Locatelli , and Handel (who met Corelli when he visited Italy between 1706-1710).

Corelli, Arcangelo
(b . Feb. 17, 1653, Fusignano, near Imola, Papal States [Italy]d. Jan. 8, 1713, Rome), Italian violinist and composer known chiefly for his influence on the development of violin style and for his sonatas and his 12 Concerti Grossi, which established the concerto grosso form. Corelli's mother, Santa Raffini, having been left a widow five weeks before his birth, named him after his deceased father, Arcangelo. There are no documented details on his first years of study. It is thought that his first teacher was the curate of San Savino, a village on the outskirts of Fusignano. Later, he went to Faenza and Lugo, where he received his first elements of musical theory. Between 1666 and 1667 he studied with Giovanni Benvenuti, violinist of the chapel of San Petronio in Bologna. Benvenuti taught him the first principles of the violin, and another violinist, Leonardo Brugnoli, furthered his education. After a four-year stay in Bologna, Corelli went to Rome. Reliable evidence on his activities is lacking for the first five years, but it is likely that he played the violin at the Tordinona Theatre. Also, it is possible that in 1677 he made a trip to Germany, returning to Rome in 1680. On June 3, 1677, he sent his first composition, Sonata for Violin and Lute

ARCANGELO CORELLI
Arcangelo Corelli was born at Fusignano in 1653 into a family that had enjoyed considerable prosperity since the fifteenth century. Legend even suggested descent from the Roman general Coriolanus and further improbable anecdotes surround a childhood during which he seems to have taken music lessons from a priest at Faenza, continued at Lugo, before, in 1666, moving to the famous musical centre of Bologna, where he was able to study the violin under teachers of the greatest distinction, their precise identity subject to various conjectures. The basilica of S. Petronio in Bologna boasted a musical establishment of considerable prestige under Maurizio Cazzati, with some 33 musicians. In addition the city had been the home of a number of learned academies since the middle of the sixteenth century, largely replaced in 1666 by the Accademia Filarmonica, an association that came to exercise wide influence. In 1690 Cardinal Pamphili was appointed papal legate to Bologna and Corelli moved to the Palazzo della Cancelleria, of the newly created Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, the gifted young great-nephew of Pope Alexander VIII, who had acceded to the papacy in 1689. Cardinal Ottoboni remained Corelli's patron until the latter's death in 1713, thereafter behaving with generosity to his heirs. In Rome Corelli was held in great respect as a violinist and as a composer, although stories of less satisfactory performances during a visit to Naples, where he was defeated by the violin-writing of his colleague Alessandro Scarlatti, and of his inability to cope with the allegedly French style of the young Handel, suggest, at least, some technical limitations.
