I don't normally care about seeing a performance but this YouTube video of Henry Cowell's forearm music makes a nice case for the visual: noahmushroom also has videos for Julius Eastman, Charles Ives, Wolfgang Rihm, Arnold Schoenberg, and Toru Takemitsu. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search For the California state park, see Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park Henry Cowell (March 11, 1897 – December 10, 1965) was an American composer music theorist pianist , teacher, publisher, and impresario . His contribution to the world of music was summed up by Virgil Thomson , writing in the early 1950s: Henry Cowell's music covers a wider range in both expression and technique than that of any other living composer. His experiments begun three decades ago in rhythm, in harmony, and in instrumental sonorities were considered then by many to be wild. Today they are the Bible of the young and still, to the conservatives, "advanced."... No other composer of our time has produced a body of works so radical and so normal, so penetrating and so comprehensive. Add to this massive production his long and influential career as a pedagogue, and Henry Cowell's achievement becomes impressive indeed. There is no other quite like it. To be both fecund and right is given to few.

Subversive Prophet: Henry Cowell as Theorist and Critic
By Kyle Gann Excerpts from the article published in The Whole World of Music: A Henry Cowell Symposium , David Nicholls, editor (Harwood Academic Press, 1997) What the cynics claim of John Cage may be truer of Henry Cowell: that he is more important for his writings and ideas than for his music. In Cage's case, those of us deeply attached to Sonatas and Interludes , the 1950 String Quartet, Music of Changes Hymnkus Europeras I-V , and other beautiful and influential compositions find the cliche ludicrously unfounded. Applied to Cowell, though, the statement might hold water, if only because Cowell's compositional output has never become as well known or widely distributed as Cage's. Though often impressive, in the role of composer Cowell appears as a minor figure in the august company of Ives, Stravinsky, Varese, Schoenberg, and others of his time. As a musical thinker, however, and theorist of new musical possibilities, he is a giant in a virtual desert, towering above all his contemporaries with the possible exception of Schoenberg (and at present, Cowell's speculations look to be more prophetic and enduring than Schoenberg's, whose influence is no longer in the ascendant). It is not difficult to argue that Cowell was the least tradition-bound, most original musical thinker and theorist of his era. Much of what was best in Cowell's legacy can be found in his writings and publications: his theory books New Musical Resources and

Cowell, Henry (1897-1965) American composer, pianist, theorist, and teacher Henry Dixon Cowell was an important musical innovator who sought to create an "ultramodern" style based on the synthesis of Western, Asian, and African music. His brilliant career as composer and performer was severely damaged when he was arrested at the age of 39 for having sex with a seventeen-year-old male and subsequently imprisoned. The circumstances of Cowell's upbringing were unusual and influenced his personal and musical perspectives throughout his life. He was born on March 11, 1897 in Menlo Park, California, then a rural area southeast of San Francisco. For many years, he made his primary residence in Menlo Park. Cowell's parents, who divorced in 1903, were writers of anarchist bent who provided him with home schooling. Sponsor Message.

A Comparison of Henry Cowell's Rhythmic Concept With Stockhausen's
In his treatise ([Cowell1930]) written in 1919 (but not published until 1930), Henry Cowell discusses the overtone series at length. He applies the overtone series to set up scales of metre, duration, and tempo, which are, in his treatment, the three elements that make up rhythm. "It is difficult to find musical means to which overtones do not apply, or may not be applied, as they may be used to measure all relationships of steady pitch, no matter how subtle are the degrees of pitch chosen; and all rhythmical relationships can be derived from overtones, as will be shown . .." ([p. 20]) Cowell mentions "undertones", descending sequences of partials, what Stockhausen refers to as "subharmonic series of proportions". To Cowell, they arise naturally from properties of acoustics, and they are related to overtones, or ascending sequences of partials, in ways that parallel the relationship of "minor" intervals to "major" intervals. He is on a quest for "new musical resources", as is Stockhausen in his search for ways to parameterize and unify the microstructure and macrostructure of sound, but Cowell does not share Stockhausen's view that "modes", like this series of undertones, are inappropriate in his music. Cowell sets up a scale based on tone-qualities (evidently referring specifically to the aspect of timbre dependent on the presence and relative amplitude of different harmonic overtones in a continuous tone). This characterization looks very much like the serial treatment of such a timbral parameter might look, except for the prominence of harmonic, instead of chromatic, qualities as his structural organizing principle:

From New World Encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Previous (Henry Clay) Next (Henry David Thoreau) Henry Cowell (March 11, 1897 – December 10, 1965) was an American composer , musical theorist, pianist, teacher, publisher, and impresario who introduced non-western sounds and instrumentation into western twentieth century compositional forms and invented new sound materials and creative effects for new aural sensations. Cowell's philosophy was to bring about a harmony and cooperation to overcome any human barriers and to build musical bridges for a new world sound. Cowell's willingness to be open to a multitude of musical influences is reflected in his statement: "I place no limitations of period or place on the musical material I may wish to draw on, for the meaning of music does depend on the materials themselves. I believe a composer must forge his own forms out of many influences that play upon him and never close his ears to any part of the world of sound Recognizing the importance of musical cultures outside his own he remarked: "Every musical culture, now matter how strange it may sound to us, will yield its systematic organization to study and experience. Underneath the many and strange and unexpected and variously appealing regional musical styles, one will always find a fundamental relationship with all other music in the world…. A composer today, and especially in America, should be free to appropriate any forms he desires. For myself I have always wanted to live in the whole world of music."

He started composing in his early teens, and by 16 he was studying with the University of California's music department. As a child growing up in the Bay Area, he was exposed to a range of musical influences. Early on, his work drew from a mix of family's Irish folk heritage and the Bay Area's Asian culture. He employed a wide range of sound materials and experimented with different compositional methods. His most significant contribution to American music was his development of tone clusters harmonies built upon diatonic seconds rather than thirds.
