(b . March 11, 1887, Menlo Park, Calif., U.S.d. Dec. 10, 1965, Shady, N.Y.), composer who, with Charles Ives , was among the most innovative American composers of the 20th century. While studying comparative musicology with Erich von Hornbostel, he became interested in the music of non-Western cultures; he later studied Oriental and Middle Eastern music, and non-Western elements appear in many of his compositions. He taught at the New School for Social Research, New York City (1932-52), and from 1949 at Columbia University. His innovations appear particularly in the piano pieces written between 1912 and 1930. Seeking new sonorities, he developed

Read More Read Less His pianistic techniques continue to influence countless younger composers; his fascination with extra-European music was an inspiration to many composers beginning with John Cage and Lou Harrison . Among the many intriguing ideas in Cowell's extraordinary theoretical treatise New Musical Resources, begun when he was about 20 years old and finally published in 1930, are far-reaching concepts of the linking of pitch and rhythm that were the foundation of the masterful player-piano music of Conlon Nancarrow . The finest music in his immense portfolio is thoroughly melodious, quirky, and among the most user-friendly of the mid-20th century.

He founded (1927) New Music Edition, a quarterly publishing music by contemporary American and European composers. In 1931, with the help of Leon Theremin , he invented the rhythmicon, a device that produces various rhythms and cross-rhythms mechanically, for which he wrote a concerto (1932). An interest in counterpoint produced the five Hymns and Fuguing Tunes American Composers on American Music (1933). He also wrote on numerous musical subjects and was an influential teacher whose many students included John Cage , George Gershwin , and Alan Hovhaness . In the late 1950s he and his ethnomusicologist wife traveled throughout the Middle East, India, and Japan collecting musical materials, which he later incorporated into compositions.
