Frederick Delius was born in Bradford in the West Riding of Yorkshire in the north of England. His parents were German : Julius and Elise Pauline Delius had moved from Bielefeld , Germany, to Britain to set themselves up in the wool business. Frederick ('Fritz' to his family, 'Fred' to his friends) Delius was the fourth of their fourteen children. He was educated at Bradford Grammar School (where the singer John Coates was his contemporary). Delius felt little attraction to the country of his birth and spent most of his life abroad, in the United States and on the continent of Europe, chiefly in France . Nonetheless his music has been described by Felix Aprahamian as 'extremely redolent of the soil of this country [Britain] and characteristic of the finer elements of the national spirit'.

Delius was born in Bradford, England, but he never spent much time there. He spent his early years working in the family wool business and later running an orange-plantation in Florida. After that he went on to study music in Leipzig. Delius settled down with his wife, Jelka, in France. First in Paris, then later in Grez-sur-Loing where stayed the rest of their lives, with the exception of the WW1 years where they stayed in the UK. The British Music Society's book "British composer profiles" says this about Delius: Born at Bradford of German parents, Fredrick Delius started a career in his father's wool business, using his supposedly commercial trips to Germany, Scandinavia and France to further his musical education. After a period in Florida as an orange grower Delius, aided by Grieg, persuaded his father to send him to Leipzig, where he studied with Sitt and Reinecke. He settled in France, first at Paris, then at Grez-sur-Loing, where he remained for the rest of his life, cut off from the English musical world except for his close friendship with younger admirers such as Philip Heseltine and Percy Grainger. I have asked myself several times, why do I like Delius and what made me notice him. I can't give a good answer to that question. I just like his music very much. My first Delius CD was a Naxos CD with orchestral music (8.553001). It's a very good CD with some of his most famous music (Paris, Brigg Fair, Eventyr, La Calinda from Koanga and Prelude from Irmelin). It's not until recently that I have got much of his music. It does help that it has been released several excellent CDs with his music the last few years.

Frederick Delius and Carl Schuricht
A few lines back I wrote the name of Delius. A British subject but of German origin, Delius had been intended by his parents for a commercial career. At the age of twenty he was working an orange plantation in Florida. It was there that he began to study music on his own, and then he left America to settle in Europe. I heard his Seadrift , based on the poem by Walt Whitman, performed at a festival held in Essen in I906 with the composer present. As I listened to this music, which is so undeservedly sneered at nowadays, I forgot orchestra, singers and audience and lost myself in a dream from which I only awoke the next morning I went to see Delius. He was a charming man, natural, sensitive and good-hearted.
, he said to me: "I have eight sisters..."
As for me, I declared to him,
"I haven't got an orchestra yet, but as soon as I have the first work I'll play is your Seadrift!
And I kept my promise, at Frankfurt, though I slightly rearranged the orchestration which I considered imperfect. Delius was in the audience again that evening.
He embraced me and said

The Delius Trust The Delius Society
Welcome to the Frederick Delius website
This website, created jointly by the Delius Trust and The Delius Society, is dedicated to providing resources and information relating to the composer Frederick Delius (1862-1934). Delius composed operas, works for chorus and orchestra, instrumental pieces, concertos, chamber music and songs. The Delius Trust was set up in 1935 under the will of the composer's widow Jelka Rosen Delius. The Trust, which is funded by royalties from public performances of Delius's works, promotes the music of Delius and of British composers born since 1860 by giving help towards the cost of performances, publications and recordings. The Delius Society was formed by a group of enthusiasts in 1962, the centenary year of the composer's birth. All members receive The Delius Society Journal , published twice-yearly, which carries articles about Delius, his life and his music. Branches in London and the Midlands organise talks, recitals and other events which feature the music of Delius and his contemporaries. With the aim of encouraging young musicians to investigate the composer's music, the Society organises an annual Delius Prize competition at a musical academy.

FREDERICK DELIUS
Born in 1862 in Bradford of German parentage, Delius was sent by his father to Florida as an orange-grower. There he developed further his earlier musical interests and eventually persuaded his father to support him during a period of musical study at Leipzig Conservatory, where he met Grieg. With continued paternal support he moved thereafter to Paris and in 1897 settled at Grez-sur-Loing with the painter Jelka Rosen, who later became his wife. His final years brought blindness and paralysis, the result of an early syphilitic infection, and his later music was dictated to the young English musician Eric Fenby, who became his amanuensis. Delius had a strong champion in the conductor Sir Thomas Beecham, who did much to bring his music before the British public. The musical language of Delius with a characteristic harmony and lyricism of its own often has a rhapsodic intensity of feeling. Stage Works The stage works of Delius include the lyric drama Koanga, a love- story set on a Mississippi plantation, where the heroine, the slave-girl Palmyra, rejects the advances of the overseer in favour of a prince of her own tribe, Koanga. La Calinda, from this opera, is a well known orchestral excerpt. The opera A Village Romeo and Juliet, based on a novel by Gottfried Keller, is generally known to concert-audiences because of the familiar orchestral interlude The Walk to the Paradise Garden, as the lovers walk together to a village inn. From the later opera Fennimore and Gerda comes an orchestral Intermezzo, arranged after the death of the composer by Eric Fenby. The opera Irmelin, first performed under Beecham only in 1953, offers an orchestral Prelude for concert repertoire. Incidental music for James Elroy Flecker's Hassan has again provided items for concert repertoire.

Frederick Delius
Frederick Delius was born in Bradford, England in 1862, to German parents. Julius Delius, a successful wool merchant who had moved from Bielfeld to Bradford with his wife Elise, named his fourth child (of fourteen) Fritz Theodore Albert. Fritz Delius, who loved to explore the nearby Yorkshire moors, grew up in a musical home and later wrote that "my father loved music intensely and used to tinker on the piano when he knew he was alone. He was a great concertgoer and he often had chamber music in his house." The orange grove was not a success so in 1884 Delius abandoned the plantation and, after earning a meagre living in America teaching music and singing, he entered the Leipzig Conservatory in 1886. He resumed violin lessons and at this time began composing seriously. The Florida Suite, written in 1888, recalls the music Delius heard in Florida. Around this same time he met Grieg, who became a lifelong friend and exerted a powerful influence on the younger composer. In 1888 Delius moved to Paris; after a time he settled in his future wife's home at Grez-sur-Loing near Fontainbleau. He lived in France, with wartime interruptions, for the remainder of his life. In 1903 Frederick Delius and painter Jelka Rosen were married; by this time his music had achieved modest popularity in England and Germany.
