Major Works:

Many other choral works have survived including 8 masses and 84 songs.
Other Information:
Dufay worked as chapel master in Cambrai before joining the Papal Chapel in Rome in 1428. He worked for the Duke of Savoy in 1433 and then joined the Papal Chapel in Florence and Bologna in 1435. In 1438 he returned to work in Savoy and then studied law at the University of Turin. In 1445 he stopped moving and settled down in Cambrai as canon of the cathedrals of Cambrai and Mons. Dufay composed sacred and secular works including many fine masses and chansons. Together with Binchois, whom he may have met in 1434, and Dunstable, Dufay is classifed as belonging to the Burgundian School of late Medieval/early Renaissance composition. It is unlikely, however, that he actually worked in the Burgundian court. General Bibliography: Kennedy, Michael,

Biography
Guillaume Dufay (Du Fay, Du Fayt) (August 5, 1397? – November 27, 1474) was a Franco-Flemish composer of the early Renaissance. As the central figure in the Burgundian School, he was the most famous and influential composer in Europe in the mid-15th century.
Life
Early life
From Cambrai to Italy and Savoy
During this period Dufay also began his long association with the Este family in Ferrara, some of the most important musical patrons of the Renaissance, and with which he probably had become acquainted during the days of his association with the Malatesta family; Rimini and Ferrara are not only geographically close, but the two families were related by marriage, and Dufay composed at least one ballade for Niccolò III, Marquis of Ferrara. In 1437 Dufay visited the town. When Niccolò died in 1441, the next Marquis maintained the contact with Dufay, and not only continued financial support for the composer but copied and distributed some of his music.
Return to Cambrai
The struggle between the papacy and the Council of Basel continued through the 1430s, and evidently Dufay realised that his own position might be threatened by the spreading conflict, especially since Pope Eugene was deposed in 1439 by the Council and replaced by Duke Amédée of Savoy himself, as Pope (Antipope) Felix V. At this time Dufay returned to his homeland, arriving in Cambrai by December of that year. In order to be a canon at Cambrai, he needed a law degree, which he obtained in 1437; he may have studied at University of Turin in 1436. One of the first documents mentioning him in Cambrai is dated December 27, 1440, when he received a delivery of 36 lots of wine for the feast of St. John the Evangelist.

GUILLAUME DUFAY
Educator of music
INTRODUCTION
Guillaume Dufay was a famous Renaissance composer.

BACKGROUND
Dufay was born in Cambrai, France, in the year of 1399 and died in 1474. He spent the majority of his career in Cambria. He joined a choir with fifteen to twenty other members, originally. As the years passed, members, including Dufay, moved to other choirs for money and other such reasons. Guillaume Dufay was a chief figure of music schools because of his completion of education as a choir master, as well as being very well-educated in most aspects of music.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Dufay's large musical output contained masterpieces of every genre, or style and type of music. Some types of his were:
  • dramatic cycles
  • cyclic masses
  • isorhythmic motets
  • simply ornamented hymns

Some of Dufay's main changes in music were:
  • paths toward modern day harmonies
  • use of third intervals
  • new structure of staffs

He introduced harmonies which then brought out the melody in his works Dufay made the rules and imitations for the cannon. The cannon is a song or melody with two or more parts. The first group plays the melody, then the second group repeats it while the first plays a new melody or harmony, followed by the second group and the song continues in this fashion.
Guillaume Dufay was the first composer to use a folk song in mass. A mass is a group of songs sung to honour God in the Roman Catholic Church.

Early life
From the evidence of his will, he was probably born in Beersel, in the vicinity of Brussels. He was the illegitimate child of an unknown priest and a woman named Marie Du Fayt. Marie moved with her son to Cambrai early in his life, staying with a relative who was a canon of the cathedral there. Soon Dufay's musical gifts were noticed by the cathedral authorities, who evidently gave him a thorough training in music. He studied with Rogier de Hesdin during the summer of 1409, and he was listed as a choirboy in the cathedral from 1409 to 1412. During those years, he studied with Nicolas Malin, and the authorities must have been impressed with the boy's gifts because they gave him his own copy of Villedieu’s Doctrinale in 1411, a highly unusual event for one so young. In June 1414, at the age of only 16, he had already been given a benefice as chaplain at St. Géry, immediately adjacent to Cambrai. Later that year he probably went to the Council of Constance (Konstanz), staying possibly until 1418, at which time he returned to Cambrai.

Dufay, Guillaume,
Dufay also spelled DU FAY (b. c . 1400d. Nov. 27, 1474, Cambrai, Bishopric of Cambrai), French composer noted for both his church music and his secular chanson. Dufay was chorister at the Cambrai cathedral (1409), entered the service of Carlo Malatesta of Rimini c . 1420, and in 1428 joined the papal singers. In 1426 he became a canon of Cambrai. After seven years with the Duke of Savoy he lived at Cambrai from about 1440 and supervised the music of the cathedral. He took a degree in canon law about 1445 and in 1446 became a canon of Mons. Dufay's surviving works include 87 motets, 59 French chansons, 7 Italian chansons, 7 complete masses, and 35 mass sections. He often used, and may have originated, the technique of fauxbourdon , a style of composition based on the sonorities of the third and sixth and derived from English descant, an improvisational practice. During his Italian period Dufay composed a number of ceremonial motets for public celebrations, among them the election of Pope Eugenius IV (1431), the Treaty of Viterbo (1433), and the dedication of Brunelleschi's dome for Sta. Maria del Fiore, Florence (1436). For the brilliant "Feast of the Pheasant" held in 1454 by Philip the Good of Burgundy and intended to initiate a crusade to recapture Jerusalem, Dufay composed a lamentation for the Church in Constantinople. Dufay's chansons, normally in three voices, deal with subjects such as springtime, love, and melancholy. Most use the poetic-musical forms of the ballade, rondeau, and virelai; a few are written in freer form.

Guillaume Dufay
(c.1400 - 1474)
Dufay's music flows more smoothly than the characteristically complex rhythmic textures of the late Medieval period, and is marked by graceful melodies and a compelling sense of direction. As his career progressed and his fame grew, Dufay increasingly took up the four-voice vocal texture which was to be characteristic of the early Renaissance as a whole. His four cantus firmus masses "Se la face ay pale," "L'homme arme," "Ecce ancilla domini," and "Ave regina caelorum" are landmarks in what was to become the dominant style of mass composition. The Missa "Se la face ay pale" is probably the earliest surviving mass based on a secular theme, previous cantus-firmus masses having been based on liturgical chant. Today, we value Dufay's music not only for its grace and invention, but also for its significant historical position in the quickly evolving style of the early Renaissance. The fact that the life of so cosmopolitan a character from this period has been preserved so well in documentation lends invaluable insight on the musical developments of the time. ~
