Leibniz, Gottfried (1646-1716)

German philosopher, physicist, and mathematician whose mechanical studies included forces and weights. He believed in a deterministic universe which followed a "pre-established harmony." He extended the work of his mentor Huygens from kinematics to include dynamics He was self-taught in mathematics, but nonetheless developed calculus independently of Newton . Although he published his results slightly after Newton , his notation was by far superior (including the integral sign and derivative notation), and is still in use today. It is unfortunate that continental and English mathematicians remained embroiled for decades in a heated and pointless priority dispute over the discovery of calculus Leibniz made many contributions to the study of differential equations discovering the method of separation of variables reduction of homogeneous equations to separable ones, and the procedure for solving first order linear equations. He used the idea of the determinant 50 years before Cramer , and did work on the multinomial theorem Leibniz combined the Scala Naturae with his plenum (continuous) view of nature, and called the result the Law of Continuity. He believed that it was not possible to put organisms into discrete categories, stating "Natura non facit saltus" (Nature does nothing in leaps).

42. Gottfried Wilhelm Von Leibniz
Biography with short comments to his work.
http://www.stetson.edu/~efriedma/periodictable/html/Li.html
Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz
Gottfried Leibniz's father died when Leibniz was only 6, and he was brought up by his mother, from whom he learned his moral and religious values. In school, he taught himself advanced Latin and Greek, and read Aristotle and many metaphysics and theology books. At the age of 14, he entered the University of Leipzig to study philosophy and mathematics. A few days after Leibniz was awarded his Master's Degree in philosophy, his mother died. After being awarded a bachelor's degree in law, Leibniz worked on his habilitation in philosophy. In this work, published in 1666, Leibniz aimed to reduce all reasoning and discovery to a combination of basic elements such as numbers, letters, sounds and colours. Despite his growing reputation and acknowledged scholarship, Leibniz was refused the doctorate in law at Leipzig. He went immediately to the University of Altdorf where he received a doctorate in law in 1667. During the next few years Leibniz undertook a variety of different projects, scientific, literary and political. He also continued his law career taking up residence at the courts of Mainz before 1670. One of Leibniz's lifelong aims was to collate all human knowledge. As part of this scheme, Leibniz tried to bring the work of the learned societies together to coordinate research. Leibniz put much energy into promoting scientific societies. Later in life, he was involved in moves to set up academies in Berlin, Dresden, Vienna, and St. Petersburg.

    Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz

In his lifetime, his songs were well enough known for some to call him the " Schubert of North Germany", and Hugo Wolf came to admire his work. He is less known today, but sometimes his ballads and songs, which amount to over 400, are occasionally performed.

Loewe was born in Löbejün and received his first music lessons from his father. He was a choir-boy, first at Köthen , and later at Halle , where he went to grammar school. The beauty of Loewe's voice brought him under the notice of Madame de Staël , who procured him a pension from Jérôme Bonaparte , then king of Westphalia , which enabled him to further his education in music, and to study theology at Halle University . This ended in 1813, on the flight of the king.

    Gottfried Keller
    From LoveToKnow 1911
GOTTFRIED KELLER (1819-1890), German poet and novelist, was born at Zurich on the 19th of July 1819. His father, a master joiner, dying while Gottfried was young, his early education was neglected; he, however, was in 1835 apprenticed to a landscape painter, and subsequently spent two years (1840-1842) in Munich learning to paint. Interest in politics drew him into literature, and his talents were first disclosed in a volume of short poems, Gedichte (1846). This obtained him recognition from the government of his native canton , and he was in 1848 enabled to take a short course of philosophical study at the university of Heidelberg . From 1850 to 1855 he lived in Berlin , where he wrote his most important novel, Der grilne Heinrich (1851-1853; revised edition 1879-1880), remarkable for its delicate autographic portraiture and the beautiful episodes interwoven with the action. This was followed by Die Leute von Seldwyla (1856), studies of Swiss provincial life, including in Romeo and Julia auf dem Dorfe one of the most powerful short stories in the German language , and in Die drei gerechten Kammmacher

    56. Gilbert Gottfried
By Nick Krewen. The Hamilton Spectator - Octopus Media
    http://www.octopusmediaink.com/GilbertGottfried.html
PUBLISHED IN THE HAMILTON SPECTATOR Thursday, February 26, 1997 By Nick Krewen If you ever buy GILBERT GOTTFRIED a sandwich, don't offer him any Miracle Whip as a choice of condiment. It seems that Gottfried, the squinting comedian who has made a career out of his obnoxious, high-decibel Brooklyn accent, is on the outs with Kraft, for whom he once recorded a voice-over for a commercial that featured him as a jar of Miracle Whip. According to Gottfried, Kraft pulled the plug on the spot one day without warning and replaced his voice with one that was much more bland. "That's a funny story," recalls the Manhattan-based Gottfried from his Toronto hotel prior to launching a week of Yuk Yuk's comedy club appearances around Ontario. "I was doing the voice-over for a while, and then somebody with the company heard me on (shock jock) HOWARD STERN's radio show and got very offended, and they fired me. I guess they thought I was too dirty for their pure product." Gottfried says he's still mystified as to what exact words he uttered to justify his termination. "God knows," he says. "Maybe I said something nice about ketchup. Anyway, I prefer to eat Hellman's Mayonnaise. Miracle Whip tastes like that white paste you use to use when you were in grade school. I've been making hand puppets with Miracle Whip."

Artist: Gottfried, Gilbert Gottfried still a stand-up guy The whiny voice-over of comedy delivers at comedy festival show By JIM SLOTEK fctAdTag("bigbox",MyGenericTagVar,1); Friday, February 21, 1997 By JIM SLOTEK Before Aladdin's parrot entered his life and before his whiny voice showed up on every other TV ad, fans of Gilbert Gottfried wondered whether his heart was really in standup. Who could tell? His face masks his mood, and his voice is his insurance. If he gets stuck, he'll just repeat the last thing he said over and over, getting laughs out of a mantra. He looks as cranky after a good set as a bad one (though I find his shows unwaveringly consistent). Presumably he doesn't need the money these days, so he must really like the mike. And at the first of two Toronto Comedy Fest shows at Yuk Yuk's Superclub Wednesday, Gilbert delivered the same performance as ever - about 45 minutes (Springsteen he's not) with vocal filler, punctuated by brutally sarcastic observations. Like why is everybody in Da Vinci's The Last Supper sitting on one side of the table? Gilbert posits that "if they were on both sides of the table some of them would be looking back like this," he said, offering up a hilarious over-the-shoulder "say-cheese" grin.
