Johann Gottfried Von Herder
From LoveToKnow 1911
JOHANN GOTTFRIED VON HERDER (1744-1803), one of the most prolific and influential writers that Germany has produced, was born in Mohrungen, a small town in East Prussia , on the 25th of August 1744. Like his contemporary Lessing, Herder had throughout his life to struggle against adverse circumstances. His father was poor, having to put together a subsistence by uniting the humble offices of sexton choir -singer and petty schoolmaster. After receiving some rudimentary instruction from his father, the boy was sent to the grammar school of his native town. The mode of discipline practised by the pedantic and irritable old man who stood at the head of this institution was not at all to the young student's liking, and the impression made upon him stimulated him later on to work out his projects of school reform. The hardships of his early years drove him to introspection and to solitary communion with nature, and thus favoured a more than proportionate development of the sentimental and poetic side of his mind. When quite young he expressed a wish to become a minister of the gospel , but his aspirations were discouraged by the local clergyman. In 1762, at the age of eighteen, he went up to

After completing his philosophical and legal education at Leipzig and Altdorf, Gottfried Leibniz spent several years as a diplomat in France, England, and Holland, where he became acquainted with the leading intellectuals of the age. He then settled in Hanover, where he devoted most of his adult life to the development of a comprehensive scheme for human knowledge, comprising logic, mathematics, philosophy, theology, history, and jurisprudence. Although his own rationalism was founded upon an advanced understanding of logic , which Leibniz largely kept to himself, he did publish many less technical expositions of his results for the general public. These include a survey of the entire scheme in The New System of Nature (1695), a critical examination of Locke 's philosophy in Nouveaux Essaies sur l'entendement humain New Essays on Human Understanding ) (1704), and an attempt to resolve several theological issues in the

LENORE
by
Göttfried August Bürger
(Translated by Dante Gabriel Rossetti)
Up rose Lenore as the red morn wore,
From weary visions starting:
"Art faithless, William, or, William, art dead?
'Tis long since thy departing."
For he, with Frederick's men of might,
In fair Prague waged the uncertain fight;
Nor once had he writ in the hurry of war,
And sad was the true heart that sickened afar.
The Empress and the King,
With ceaseless quarrel tired,
At length relaxed the stubborn hate
Which rivalry inspired:
And the martial throng, with laugh and song,
Spoke of their homes as they rode along,
And clank, clank, clank! came every rank,
With trumpet-sound that rose and sank.
And here and there and everywhere,
Along the swarming ways,
Went old man and boy, with the music of joy,
On the gallant bands to gaze;
And the young child shouted to spy the vaward,
And trembling and blushing the bride pressed forward:
But ah! for the sweet lips of Lenore
The kiss and the greeting are vanished and o'er.
From man to man all wildly she ran
With a swift and searching eye;

A Little Legend of the Dance
Gottfied Keller
Thou virgin of Israel, again shalt thou be adorned with thy tablet and shalt go forth in the dances of them that make merry... Then shall the shalt rejoice in the dance and the young men and the old together. (Jeremiah 31: 4, 13) Saint Gregory relates in his tales that Musa was the dancer among the saints. She was the child of good folk, and a graceful little maiden, who diligently served the Mother of God and knew only one passion, namely, a love of dancing so uncontrollable that if the girl was not praying, then she was assuredly dancing. And she danced in every conceivable way. Musa danced with her playmates, with the children, with the young men, and even alone. She danced in her little chamber, in the great hall, in the gardens and over the meadows, and even when she approached the altar, she seemed to be dancing a delicious measure rather than walking. And on the smooth marble flags at the church door, she never forgot to try a few hasty steps. Musa found no time to wonder at all this till the dance, which lasted some time, was over, and the merry gentleman seemed to enjoy it as much as the maiden, who, for her part, might have been tripping about in Heaven. But when the music stopped, and Musa stood there panting, she began to be really afraid, and looked at the old gentleman in amazement, for he was neither out of breath nor hot and now began to speak. He introduced himself as David, the royal ancestor of Mary the Virgin, and her messenger. And he asked her whether she would like to pass an eternity of bliss in an endless dance of joy, a dance, compared with which the one they had just ended could only be called a dismal crawl.

75. HERDER: ESSAY ON THE ORIGIN OF LANGUAGE
Selected passages from the Moran and Gode translation of this 1772 work by Herder.

HERDER: ESSAY ON THE ORIGIN OF LANGUAGE 1772
see also Language Brain and Evolution In all aboriginal languages, vestiges of these sounds of nature are still to be heard Children, like animals, utter sounds of sensation. But is not the language they learn from other humans a totally different language? Condillac, with his hollow explanation of the origin of language, provided Rousseau, as we all know, with the occasion to get the question in our century off the ground again in his own peculiar way, that is, to doubt it. Because sounds of emotion will never turn into a human language, does it follow that nothing else could ever have turned into it? In lieu of instincts, other hidden forces must be dormant in it [the human infant] ...No, I am not jumping ahead. I do not suddenly ascribe to man - as an arbitrary qualitas occulta - a new power providing him with the ability to create language. I do not ... proceed on the basis of arbitrary or social forces but from the general animal economy. The sound of bleating perceived by a human soul as the distinguishing mark of the sheep became, by virtue of this reflection, the name of the sheep... And what is the entire human language other than a collection of such words? These numerous unbearable fallacies ... The point here is that it is not the organization of the mouth that made language .. The point here is that it is not a scream of emotion, for not a breathing machine but a reflective soul invented language... Least of all is it agreement, an arbitrary convention of society".

The last of the great Continental Rationalists was Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz . Known in his own time as a legal advisor to the Court of Hanover and as a practicing mathematician who co-invented the calculus, Leibniz applied the rigorous standards of formal reasoning in an effort to comprehend everything. A suitably sophisticated logical scheme, he believed, can serve as a reliable guide to the ultimate structure of reality. But Leibniz published little of his philosophical work during his own lifetime. For an understanding of the technical logical foundations of his system, we must rely upon letters and notebooks which became available only centuries later and upon the aphoristic summary of its results in La Monadologie Monadology ) (1714). His Discours de Metaphysique Discourse on Metaphysics ) (1686) and Theodicy ) (1710) present to the general public more popular expositions of Leibniz's central themes. Our strategy will be to begin with the logical theories and work outward to the more accessible doctrines.

80. Leibniz And Russia
Essay about Leibniz, his love to Russia and his correspondence with Peter the Great.
http://www.helsinki.fi/~mroinila/russia.htm
LEIBNIZ AND THE GREAT MISSION : RUSSIA
Markku Roinila Approximately twenty years later Leibniz took a renewed interest in Russia. This was partly due to the interest in China (the relations between Russia and China were improved after agreement of Ner_insk in 1689 ), partly due to the interest in the different languages, dialects and cultures in Russia and the unknown Siberia. By this time Leibniz was an active participant in the study of languages. The most important reason, however, according to many commentators, notably Benz, was Russian's new Czar, Peter the Great. Peter had been travelling around Europe "incognito" and aroused interest seldom been laid upon a Russian prince. However, still in 1698 Leibniz wrote to Thomas Burnett : "...yet I am a little in the sentiment of the Czar of Muscovy, who, I have been told, admired certain ingenious machines more than all of the pictures which he was shown in the royal palace." In the light of this letter, one could suspect that the influence Benz devotes to Peter the Great is somewhat exaggerated. His continuing interest in China and also the intense study of Eastern languages could be seen as equal factors in Leibniz's awaken attraction to Russia. Leibniz entered into correspondence with some experts on Russia including Croze, Royal librarian of Prussia, Ludolph, orientalist, Cuneau, chancellor of Frederick I, Witsen, the mayor of Amsterdam, Sparvenfeld, philologist and Huyssen, Czar's legal counsellor.
