RESOURCES Biographies Eisler, Hanns Previous Next Eisler, Hanns Bertolt Brecht's film Kuhle Wampe (1932) and a long-time collaboration with the playwright begins. During this time Eisler writes only music that makes reference to daily political events of the Weimar Republic. His first compositions for films are for the short Opus III (dir. Walter Ruttmann, 1923), Das Lied vom Leben (dir. Alexis Granowsky, 1931), Niemandsland (dir. Victor Trivas Kuhle Wampe, Dans les rues (dir. Trivas, 1933). Travelling extensively through Europe during the mid-1930s, Eisler settles in New York in 1938 to teach music history and composition at the New School for Social Research. Together with fellow-exile Theodor W. Adorno he writes (1947). Between 1942 and 1947, Eisler lives in Los Angeles and writes composition for eight Hollywood films, including Hangmen Also Die (dir. Fritz Lang, A Scandal in Paris (dir. Douglas Sirk, 1945) and The Woman on the Beach (dir. Jean Renoir, 1946). In 1949 he resettles in East Berlin, accepting a position at the Staatliches Konservatorium Berlin and composing the national anthem for the GDR. Eisler did not believe in art for art's sake. Instead he thought music should play a social and political role. He wrote much music to the words of Bertolt Brecht and some music to the words of the philosopher Silone. He lived in the United States from 1933 to 1948 when he was asked to leave because of his political beliefs. Eisler was a lifelong supporter of communism but had many disagreements with its implementation by Stalin and others. Hanns Eisler 100 Jahre Bertolt Brecht Hanns Eisler - Biographie Der Komponist Hanns Eisler wurde am 6. Juli 1898 in Leipzig als Sohn des Wiener Philosophen Rudolf Eisler geboren. Im Jahre 1901 zog die ganze Familie nach Wien um. Bereits in seiner Schulzeit machte er erste Kompositionsversuche. Während seines Studiums erhielt Hanns Eisler von 1919-1923 Privatunterricht bei Arnold Sch�nberg, 1922 auch bei Anton von Webern. Im Jahr 1925 erhielt er den Künstlerpreis der Stadt Wien und zog um nach Berlin. Im Jahre 1927 arbeitete er zusammen mit der Agitprop-Gruppe "Das Rote Sprachrohr" und komponierte erste Film- und Bühnenmusiken. Zudem fungierte er noch als Musikkritiker für die "Rote Fahne". Hanns Eisler Hanns Eisler July 6 September 6 ) was a German and Austrian composer . Eisler was born in Leipzig where his father, Rudolf Eisler, was a professor of philosophy. In 1901 the family moved to Vienna . During World War I Eisler served as a front-line soldier in the Austro-Hungarian army and was wounded several times in combat. Returning to Vienna after Austria's defeat, he studied from 1919 to 1923 under Arnold Schoenberg . Eisler was the first of Schoenberg's disciples to compose in the twelve-tone or serial technique. In 1925 Eisler moved to Berlin Communist Party of Germany although he never joined. His music became increasingly oriented towards political themes and, to Schoenberg's dismay, more "popular" in style with influences drawn from jazz and cabaret . At the same time, he drew closer to Bertolt Brecht , whose own turn towards Marxism happened at about the same time. The collaboration between the two artists lasted for the rest of Brecht's life. Eisler wrote the music for several Brecht plays, including The Measures Taken The Mother (1931) and Schweik in the Second World War (1944). They also collaborated on protest songs which played a role in the political turmoil of
