EDWARD ELGAR
The British composer Edward Elgar was born at Broadheath, Worcester, in 1857. The son of a musician, he showed an early aptitude for music, learning to play the violin, organ and other instruments, as well as composing; after leaving school he continued his musical activities, performing with a variety of groups and writing several successful pieces of light music. Having married in 1889, a year later he received a commission from the Three Choirs Festival for the overture Froissart and in 1893 he completed The Black Knight , the first of many choral works that were taken up by the great choral societies of the Midlands and North of England. During this period Elgar had continued to earn his living as a violin teacher, but in 1899 he had his first major success in London when Hans Richter conducted his Variations on an Original Theme (Enigma) . This was followed in quick succession by Sea Pictures The Dream of Gerontius , composed for the 1900 Birmingham Festival.

Edward Elgar (1857 - 1934)
Background

Edward Elgar was born in Broadheath, Worcester, on 2nd June 1857. His father owned a music-shop in Worcester, and was also an organist and piano tuner. Edward grew up in a highly musical environment, and taught himself to play various instruments, including the organ and the violin. His earliest compositions can be traced to his childhood - at age 12 he wrote incidental music to a family play, The Wand of Youth.
Early obscurity
During his youth, Elgar played the violin in local orchestras, formed a wind quintet with his brothers and friends, and also became assistant organist to his father at St George's Church, Worcester. In 1879, he became bandmaster at a local lunatic asylum, a position which gave him an opportunity to hone his compositional technique arranging and composing music for staff concerts.
For the next decade he continued to compose for various local musical organisations, and also taught the violin. In 1889, he married one of his pupils, Caroline Alice Roberts, against the wishes of her family. She was to prove a strong and faithful wife, and assisted him greatly throughout his career.

39. Elgar's 'Enigma' Variations:a New Book

Edward Elgar (1857-1934)
The 'Enigma' Variations
 "Elgar's 'Enigma' Variations - a Centenary Celebration"
Elgar's 'Enigma' Variations had its first performance in June 1899, and audiences and critics were quick to realise that a masterpiece had come among them. It has stayed at the forefront of the orchestral repertoire ever since, and the Nimrod variation in particular has achieved a very special place in the nation's affections.  Patrick Turner's authoritative book, written to celebrate the centenary of this much-loved work, takes a refreshing new look at the circumstances surrounding its composition, together with its associated puzzles, making extensive reference to a wide range of source material. Some of this appears here in published form for the first time, including - surprisingly - the first ever reference to an enigma in connection with the work.  He offers an explanation of how the enigma itself came into being, and a new solution that is unique insofar as it is the first time a tune has been put forward that actually fits Elgar's theme perfectly.
