In later life, after Alice's death, Elgar became a close friend of the playwright and critic George Bernard Shaw . By this time, Elgar had largely given up composing. He felt that his inspiration had gone and his music to be out of sympathy with the mood of the times. Certainly, there were far fewer performances of his major works than twenty years previously, and when he did again turn his hand to composing, he usually turned for inspiration to his early sketchbooks (the 'Shed' books) or the works of other composers (his orchestration of works by Bach Handel and Chopin ). Around 1930, however, a sense of motivation returned. In quick succession, he completed

Modern History Sourcebook:
Music and Nationalism
Nationalism was the most successful political force of the 19th century. It emerged from two main sources: the Romantic exaltation of "feeling" and "identity" and the Liberal requirement that a legitimate state be based on a "people" rather than, for example, a dynasty, God, or imperial domination. Both Romantic "identity nationalism" and Liberal "civic nationalism" were essentially middle class movements. There were two main ways of exemplification: the French method of "inclusion" - essentially that anyone who accepted loyalty to the civil French state was a "citizen". In practice this meant the enforcement of a considerable degree of uniformity, for instance the destruction of regional languages. The German method, required by political circumstances, was to define the "nation" in ethnic terms. Ethnicity in practice came down to speaking German and sometimes just having a German name. For the largely German-speaking Slavic middle classes of Prague, Agram (Zagreb) etc. who took up the nationalist ideal, the ethnic aspect became even more important than it had been for the Germans.

Evans-Pritchard) Next (Edward Gibbon) Sir Edward Elgar Sir Edward Elgar, 1st Baronet , OM, GCVO (June 2, 1857 – February 23, 1934) was an English Romantic composer . Several of his first major orchestral works, including the Enigma Variations and the Pomp and Circumstance Marches , were greeted with acclaim. He also composed oratorios chamber music symphonies and instrumental concertos . He was appointed Master of the King's Musick in 1924. The son of a musician (his father was a church organist) Elgar was exposed to liturgical music from his earliest years and was deeply inspired by scripture. He was to compose many works based on scriptural references and several of his large-scale works ( The Apostles, The Kingdom and The Dream of Gerontius ) are based on Christian narratives. Commenting on his views of the Almighty, Elgar writes, "God when influencing persons is called the Spirit of God. The Spirit of God is nothing less than God, it is God."
