Other Information: Ellington's actual name is Edward Kennedy Ellington. Even though the majority of his work was in popular jazz idioms, Ellington composed a small quantity of works for classical ensembles and one opera. His music has influenced many composers in a variety of idioms. Below is an essay from contributor, Richard V. Duffy, who is working on a book about Ellington. EDWARD "DUKE" ELLINGTON "THE ENTREPRENEUR OF COMPOSITION" In the year 1999, The Pulitzer Prize-Special Award was bestowed posthumously on Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington commemorating the centennial year of his birth, April 29, 1899; in recognition of his musical genius, which brought to the surface his sensitivity to art and beauty, for the principles of democracy-through the medium of jazz and popular music, made an indelible contribution to art and culture. By the time of his passing, and even before that, Ellington was viewed as one of the greatest of all composers and musicians. The French government honored him with the highest award, the Legion of Honor; the United States government bestowed upon him the highest civil honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The Duke was known to have entertained royalty, and, those whom abode in the more common idiom of life. By the end of his fifty-year entertainment span, Ellington had played over 20,000 performances-world wide....he was the Duke, the Duke of Ellington.

© Hans-Joachim Schmidt, themen Verlag Köln. Last update October 30, 2003 I sought information about the creative process and the development of arrangements. Then I had to find my way through the collected material. So I wrote the following lists. This is not intended to be complete. A thousand tunes by Ellington and Ellingtonians should be enough, particularly if we succeed in gathering the influential and controversial.*** *** That's what I thought in the beginning of 2000. By now there are 1500 compositions in more than 4000 recordings (Jan. 23, 2002). Acknowledgements. The first big "thank you" must go to Peter MacHare . His "Duke Ellington Panorama" has been a guide from the very beginning of my survey. Peter also helped me out with some CDs I couldn't find hereabout. And then: in the "Duke Ellington Panorama" I found the address of: Sjef Hoefsmit and the Duke Ellington Music Society, Voort 18b, 2328 Meerle, Belgium. email:

Who was Duke Ellington?
Duke Ellington (1899-1974) is America's greatest composer. Duke led an orchestra, played piano and composed over 2000 pieces of music. How did Duke get his nickname?
Duke began his life as Edward Kennedy Ellington in Washington, D.C.. He was nicknamed by a classmate who admired him. This royal nickname was appropriate for Duke because of his elegant and proud manner. Even as a child, Duke had fans. As a child, Duke disliked his piano lessons.
Duke's parents enrolled him in lessons when he was in grade school. He dreaded his lessons and preferred to play baseball instead. His parents insisted that Duke practice piano basics everyday. He grew bored with practicing the same tunes and quit his lessons. Duke didn't become interested in learning piano again until he was a teenager. Duke Ellington was attracted to girls and they were attracted to piano players.
He often joked that he learned to play the piano to attract girls. While washing dishes for his summer job, Duke met a waiter who invited him to go see ragtime pianist, Harvey Brooks. Duke loved the way Brooks expressed himself through his music. Brooks played ragtime in a way that did not follow the rules of classical pianohe had freedom to change the rules and express himself more freely. Duke discovered that he wanted to make his own music too and taught himself how to play piano like Brooks. He practiced until his fingers could fly and even arranged melodies as he played.

actually, I changed my mind; the melody is so easy (and slow) it really
doesn't need to be tabbed, since the whole thing could be played on one
string. I think it's easier (on me, at least) simply to write the note
names over the lyrics. so, here goes:

Duke Ellington
Edward Kennedy (Duke) Ellington began as a stride pianist, and matured into a composer/arranger who was comfortable in a wide range of ensembles from piano and bass duo, to large orchestras. In 1927 his band became house band at the Cotton Club, a position he kept for five years. His popular hits like "Satin Doll" and "Mood Indigo" provided a firm financial base, allowing him to have musicians available to try out his arrangements at all times. He was an influence to others with his unique melodic gifts, his harmonic innovations, and his daring use of odd intervals. He demonstrated how well swing worked with the most contemporary jazz styles of the generation which followed him.
