43. Duke Ellington
Biography, discography and filmography from the Red Hot Jazz Archive.
http://www.redhotjazz.com/duke.html
Duke Ellington brought a level of style and sophistication to Jazz that it hadn't seen before. Although he was a gifted piano player, his orchestra was his principal instrument. Like Jelly Roll Morton before him, he considered himself to be a composer and arranger, rather than just a musician. Duke began playing music professionally in Washington, D.C. in 1917. His piano technique was influenced by stride piano players like James P. Johnson and Willie "The Lion" Smith . He first visited New York in 1922 playing with Wilbur Sweatman , but the trip was unsuccessful. He returned to New York again in 1923, but this time with a group of friends from Washington D.C. They worked for a while with banjoist Elmer Snowden until there was a disagreement over missing money. Ellington then became the leader. This group was called The Washingtonians . This band worked at The Hollywood Club in Manhattan (which was later dubbed the Kentucky Club). During this time Sidney Bechet played briefly with the band (unfortunately he never recorded with them), but more significantly the trumpet player Bubber Miley joined the band, bringing with him his unique plunger mute style of playing. This sound came to be called the "Jungle Sound", and it was largely responsible for Ellington's early success. The song

Jump to: navigation search Previous (Dugong) Next (Duke of Wellington) Duke Ellington, February 1965 Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington (April 29, 1899 – May 24, 1974) was the foremost American jazz composer, pianist, and band leader. Some regard Duke Ellington as the most important figure to emerge from the U.S. jazz scene in the twentieth century. At the least, his stature can be compared to that of Louis Armstrong and Charlie Parker . In contrast to these two giants and other jazz greats, Ellington was not primarily a performer but a strong musical personality who expressed himself through his compositions and arrangements, and the performances of his band. An impressive number of great soloists passed through the ranks of his orchestra , often remaining faithful for years, even decades. Many musical careers were almost entirely defined by their association with Ellington. His compositions were often written specifically for the style and skills of these individuals, such as "Jeep's Blues" for Johnny Hodges, "The Mooche" for Tricky Sam Nanton, and "Concerto for Cottie" for Cootie Williams. Ellington as a composer and arranger helped to elevate jazz from a popular music to a fully developed art form. There were other jazz orchestras before Ellington’s—most notably Fletcher Henderson's—but Ellington's determination to find the right personnel and achieve the perfect synthesis between soloists and the orchestra set his music apart. Ellington was a consummate leader in extracting the best from his musicians, achieving a unity of purpose that was consistently greater than the sum of its parts. Not only through his musical leadership but through his natural dignity and probity, Ellington was able to transcend the limits imposed on black musicians who were typically seen as mere entertainers.
