Morton Feldman
Three Voices (for Joan LaBarbara)

Morton Feldman John Cage 1967 saw the start of Feldman's association with Universal Edition with the publication of his last graphically notated score, "In Search of an Orchestration". Then followed "On Time and the Instrumental Factor" (1969) in which he once more returned to precise notation, and from then on, with only the exception of two works in the early 1970s, he maintained control over pitch, rhythm, dynamics and duration. In 1973 the University of New York at Buffalo asked Feldman to become the Edgard Varese Professor, a post he held for the rest of his life. From the late 1970s his compositions expanded in length to such a degree that the second string quartet can last for up to five and a half hours. The scale of these works in particular has often been the cause for the controversy surrounding his works, but he would always be happy to attempt to explain his reasoning behind them: My whole generation was hung up on the 20 to 25 minute piece. It was our clock. We all got to know it, and how to handle it. As soon as you leave the 20-25 minute piece behind, in a one-movement work, different problems arise. Up to one hour you think about form, but after an hour and a half it's scale. Form is easy - just the division of things into parts. But scale is another matter. You have to have control of the piece - it requires a heightened kind of concentration. Before, my pieces were like objects; now, they're like evolving things.

Feldman's works are characterized by notational innovations which he developed to create his characteristic sound: rhythms which seem to be free and floating; pitch shadings which seem softly unfocused; a generally quiet and slowly evolving music; recurring asymmetric patterns. His later works, after 1977, also begin to explore extremes of duration.

Feldman was born in Brooklyn New York City into a family of Russian Jewish immigrants from Kiev . His father was a manufacturer of children's coats. As a child he studied piano with Vera Maurina Press, who, according to the composer himself, instilled in him a "vibrant musicality rather than musicianship."

For Samuel Beckett

Morton Feldman (1926-1987)
No other musician on these pages can stake a claim for primary Beckett-related importance more than Morton Feldman, the iconoclastic American composer. Not only are Feldman's timeless, repetitive compositions often evocative of Beckett's minimalist prose, but a meeting in Berlin, 1976, lead to a warm relationship between the composer and the writer, one that bore fruit in several projects and collaborations.
Born in New York in 1926, Morton Feldman studied music and piano privately with several teachers before becoming the pupil of Stefan Wolpe after graduating high school in 1944. Spending much of this time "arguing about music," Feldman absorbed his lessons in academic atonality, but found himself still struggling to find his own voice. (He also absorbed some of his teacher's fondness for the visual arts.) In 1950 he met John Cage at a New York performance of Webern's Opus 21, quickly falling into a relationship that had a profound impact on his artistic development. Encouraging the younger composer to follow his instincts, to open his music to indeterminacy, and to challenge all forms of received tradition, John Cage became a mentor and even something of a father-figure, and their friendship lasted the rest of their lives.

Artist: FELDMAN, MORTON Title: For Philip Guston Label: BRIDGE RECORDS Format: Price: Catalog #: BRIDGE 9078CD 1997 release. Performed by the California EAR Unit (flutes, percussion, piano, celeste). "Here is the California EAR Unit's recording of the late Morton Feldman's monumental, four hour long For Philip Guston (1984). Included in this discount priced, four disc set is an enhanced multimedia track, which includes Feldman's remarks as well as a photo montage of the composer. Morton Feldman stands as one of our century's darkest and quietest musical poets. His music seems a muffled yet spiritually inspired reaction to the speed, noise and horror of the events of the 20th century much as in the work of the painter, Mark Rothko. For Philip Guston , a composition from Feldman's last years, is music that attempts to suspend time, but without the nervous 'sequenced' energy that dominates so much of today's 'process art.' In For Philip Guston , the gigantism of Feldman's time-scale is offset by the extreme intimacy and seductiveness of the composer's expression. As Bridge Records' annotato Alan Rich puts it:

Oto kilka stron z publikacji: Kod produktu: Morton Feldman to amerykański kompozytor należący do głównych postaci muzyki XX wieku. Niniejszy utwór na wiolonczelę solo ''Projection 1'', to typowo współczesny gatunek muzyki. Utwór posiada zapis współczesny - graficzny, we wstępie dokładnie określono znaczenie poszczególnych znaków. Wskazana jest względna wysokość dźwięku, długość prostokątów określa długość trwania dźwięku. The pieces, while looking identical on paper, were actually conceived quite deifferently. In Durations I the quality of the particular instruments together suggested a closely written kaleidoscope of sound. To achieve this I wrote each voice individually, choosing intervals that seemed to erase or cancel out each sound as soon as we hear the next. In the Duration with the tuba, the weight of the three instruments used made me treat them as one. I wrote all sounds simultaneously, knowing that no instrument would never be too far behind or too far ahead of the other. Through thinning and thickening mu sounds. I kept the image intact. In Durations IV there was a combination of both. Here I was a little more precise in that 1 gave metronome indications. I also allowed the instruments to have their own individual color more pronouncedly than in the others.
