edit Life
Gabrieli was most likely born in Venice . He was one of five children, and his father came from the town of Carnia and went to Venice shortly before Giovanni's birth. While not much is known about Giovanni's early life, he probably studied with his uncle, the composer Andrea Gabrieli ; he may indeed have been brought up by him, as is implied by the dedication to his 1587 book of concerti, in which he described himself as "little less than a son" to his uncle. He also went to Munich to study with the renowned Orlando de Lassus at the court of Duke Albert V ; most likely he stayed there until about 1579. Lassus was to be one of the principal influences on the development of his musical style. By 1584 he had returned to Venice, where he became principal

GIOVANNI GABRIELI
Giovanni Gabrieli was a leading figure in Renaissance Venician music. He succeeded his uncle Andrea Gabrieli, an organist at Venice's St. Mark Basilica after his uncle's death in 1586 and retained this position until his own death in 1612. His work as a composer represents the height of musical achievement in Renaissance Venice. Gabrieli continued the traditional cori spezzati techniques developed at St. Mark's during the sixteenth century, contrasting different groups of singers and instrumentalists and making use of the spatial effects possible in the great basilica. His eight-part setting of the Jubilate, using double choir and brass, is typical of his style of writing. The most widely known of Gabrieli's works is the Sonata pian' e forte , an eight-part composition for two four-part groups of wind instruments included in the Sacrae Symphoniae of 1597, with a number of instrumental

Music Encyclopedia:
Giovanni Gabrieli
Home Library Music Encyclopedia b Venice, c d there, Aug 1612). Italian composer, nephew of Andrea Gabrieli. Like his uncle, with whom he studied, he worked briefly at the Munich court ( c 1575-8) and in 1585 he became organist of St Mark's, Venice, and of the confraternity of S Rocco, posts he held for the rest of his life. After Andrea's death, he edited many of his works for publication. His own fame and influence were widespread and crucial, notably in northern Europe - Schütz was among his many pupils - and he represents the highest point of the High Renaissance Venetian school. He composed motets and mass movements ( Symphoniae sacrae , 1597, 1615, MSS), instrumental ensemble music (1597, 1615, MSS) and organ works (1593, MSS), as well as a few madrigals (1587 and anthologies). Much of his sacred ceremonial music exploits the architecture of St Mark's, using contrasting groups of singers and players to create cori spezzati effects, but often in a more intense and dissonant style than his uncle's. His music for wind ensemble is lively and colourful and includes up-to-date concertato writing; the organ ricercares are in a well-developed and specific keyboard style.
